The 1966 stepside I recently bought makes a loud whirlling noise when the engine is started. The engine is a very quiet 250 cu in 6 cylinder with only 5000 miles on the rebuild. I can't hear the engine start over the whirlling noise the starter makes, until I release the key. Is the starter on borrowed time?
I have had bad flywheels which made an entirely different horrible sound when starting a vehicle. This sound is like the starter is taking it's time to disengage the starter gear. It is a high rpm sound the starter itself is making. When I let go of the ign key the starter whines down real fast and then I can hear the engine (250 cu in 6 cyl). It has a quiet stock-type muffler. The starter engauges quickly and starts the engine ontime, but starter makes a high rpm noise as if the starter gear may not be backing off when it should. Is their a sprag gear in the starter that's not doing its job?
Splurge and get it rebuilt, I always have them do up the one I bring in. Or go with a good quality rebuild, but go over it carefully to make sure it matches exactly. Bob
starter drive is hanging up! i have lubed them up for a temp at best fix, i would get different starter to at least test issue.
