Art & Inspiration 1965 RAMBLER MARLIN

It's for sale near me,asking $18K or best offer. Original paint,has a 287/198 HP and a twin stick which is fairly rare apparently. Anyone know anything about the trans and shifters?
I've always liked the look of the Marlins.Thinking of checking it out.

Well, you'll probably have the only one around. I doubt he has a ton of people beating a path to his door, go make an offer. Looks to be in pretty decent shape but not mint.

The wife and I just saw one as we were pulling out of the Harbor Freight parking lot down in LA. It looked like it was in its original but well kept condition. They are cool. The one you mentioned has a distinctive color scheme too. I’d look it over, drive it around and make an offer on it.
I think they used the common Borg-Warner 3 spd automatic transmission with the aluminum bellhousing and a cast iron main case like some other cars back then but I’m no AMC expert.
Not sure how that shifter works but ask the seller and fill us in.

 

I love those cars. My cousin's wife had a new one that her parents gave her. I must have been five or six. Champagne colored. That car left quite an impression on me. The interior was out of this world .My cousin didn't like it, made her sell it. Everyone was pissed as I recall. For some insane reason I think I still have the hubcaps hanging on the fence. They have a Marlin embossed in them. Edit: I looked, just a cursive M.

 

They are rare, but not worth a lot. They were not popular when new, so they never developed much of a following. Would I want one, absolutely!!! If you get it, you will have the only one at any car show you take it to. I would offer considerably less than $18,000 though.

 

A guy who attends our local cruise in owns this one. They are a great looking car

 

If you buy it and want to go to a 4-speed, the farmer a half mile down the road has one sitting in his shop that came out of a '66.

 

Well I just can't resist citing the TV ad campaign.
The car valet said to his cohort, "Whats a Marlin ? ?"
When That didn't hook, ( pun intended ) they offered the Pacer.
Interesting, I thought, that before these oddities, they tried to get on board with muscle.
Several dealers were sponsering factory Super Stock cars.

 

Always distinctive, but never a big seller. American Motors deserved more respect than it got, think AMX, The Scrambler, and The Machine!

 

With that Bob Marley plate on the front, I'd carefully be checking what's in the 2 ashtrays.

 

Was one of 6 cars listed on the Hagerty newsletter this morning as going up in price.

 

I grew up in the West Allis/Milwaukee Wisconsin area, body plant/***embly line in Milwaukee, engine/driveline plant in Kenosha. Nash/AMC cars were a fairly common site. The 4 seat Javelin, 67-74 produced 227,610 and 2 seat version AMX 68-70, 4116 produced are what I see at car shows here now. Here in Wisconsin the road salt eats everything up. Majority of Nash/AMC cars sold in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, all rust belt states so not too many survived. There is a Nash/AMC show, reunion gathering yearly. As a kid growing up my Dad had a few mid 50's Nash 2 dr hrtp with the continental kits, 6 in a row with 2 carbs, pretty kool cars, I have a soft spot for them, I always check them out.

 

My homemade center console was modeled after a twin stick. I couldn't find one for under $800 at the time

 

Mark beat me to the punch, I was gonna go out and fish through my old magazines for some Marlin information. Not too long ago I read a full test report that one of the old magazines did on one.
At my suggestion, my then GF bought a new ‘72 Javelin. She wanted a Mustang or Camaro but the dealers weren’t dealing due to their popularity. I suggested the Javelin. We found a beautiful green one with a tan interior, 6 cylinder, 3 spd w/OD for a lot less money. She drove it for years, she loved it. We added a stereo and chrome wheels to make it even better. Other than a radiator replacement, it only required regular maintenance and was trouble free. Years later, I did have to replace the rear hatch due to rust around the rear window, she lived at the beach and it was always parked outside. With the torquey six and the OD rear gearing it was quite peppy around town but gave the great mileage AMCs are known for. Great gal, great car.

 

Ya think? Public must not have thought so. I, for one, like [d] the oddities.

My first car was a '60 Rambler Cl***ic.Paid $167.00 for it.6 cylinder with push ****on automatic.Front seat folded back...great car when you're 16! One of the things I like about this Marlin is the Rambler badging cause in '66 it was AMC.I'm thinking it's a $11-$13K at most.Contacted the owner and he's gonna send me underside and underhood pics.

There are a couple of them around locally see them every year at the local car show. Neat looking.

One of my favourite muscle cars were the 66/67 Chargers, so I always liked the Marlin as well. I swear I’ve seen that one around, or one with the same colour combo.
