Perhaps a bit off topic for the H.A.M.B. (since "Resto-Rods" pretty much dominated the early '70s Street Rodding scene) ... but with the popularity of my "Andy's Picnic” and @Graham Hood's "1974 Street Rod Nationals" threads, I thought I'd share some pics from a circa 1973 event that our car club put on at the G**** Festival Grounds in Lodi, CA. Here's the program for the event: click thumbnails to enlarge
Here's some of my father's photos (actually Ektachrome slides) from the LODI '73 event: Our "HEMI 32" Coupe
NOTE: That's Bob (@bobs36hotrod) Swartz' orange w/ white top, full-fendered '29 Roadster in the foreground ... ... and @alex blanca's black w/ gold beltline & top '31 Tudor (i.e., the third car in)
NOTE: The second car on the right is Lenny (@1badnov's uncle) Mendes' orange '29 Roadster ... known as "Half Breed".
(HMB & Fremont drag photographer) Tom Meyer driving Rudy Perez' Tracknose T in the "Streetkhana" compe***ion Here's a pic of the same car at ANDY'S 3rd Annual PICNIC - July 1969: Rudy Perez' Turtledeck T (with Dragmaster ch***is) at ANDY's PICNIC '69 NOTE: After putting 40,000 miles on his T roadster, Rudy had Jack Hagemann Sr. fabricate a new nose, hood, and 5-piece belly pan ... painted it red ... and added a padded top by Halls of Oakland: Rudy's T (with the top on) at LODI '73 ... image from the Rudy Perez archives
That's pretty much it for my father's pics of cars at the LODI '73 event. There's a couple dozen more "people pics" ... but nothing much of interest to the H.A.M.B. community ... well except maybe these pics from the Women's Spark Plug Changing Contest: IIRC, it was a timed event ... first lady to change all 8 plugs, jump-in, & start the car was the winner.
Can't remember what year, but this is where John Callies "TORE IT UP!!!" with his Pontiac 303 powered Simca. That car was BAD ***!!!!
Someone recently asked where all the T roadsters have gone. What about all those cool C-cabs, definitely were one of the cars that stood out in a group.
Pat, the Callies car really was quite a piece of engineering, I never saw it in person but the couple of magazine features of it back then had me pretty worked up.
Great pictures. I have to admit, I did like, and still like, resto-rods. We build old cars, 'cause we like the look of them.
I was there but only 10 years old -- remember riding in the box of a Model A pickup with my brother out on a poker run. Good stuff for sure.
