I'm in the process of building a 41 buick super coupe. It has a 1980 camaro front clip that was in need of a rebuild. Once it was all apart, I noticed that the front springs seemed awful long. About 18 inches worth. My research indicates that the camaro had a spring with a total length of 16 inches. My guess is that it came out of something else and was installed in the camaro for some reason. My question is based on the fact that I'd like to lower the front end about 1 to 2 inches. I'll be running a 455 buick with a turbo 400. Should I simply go to CPP and order their lowering spring or can I use a v 6 spring and buy it from a local car house such as oreilly's or auto zone. Any help with spring rates would be nice.
Probably the 6 cylinder optioned suspension. Softer springs are generally longer for more spring load.
My 1981 Camaro originally had a 6 cylinder engine and it also had longer front springs. With the softer springs the front end sits much lower with the 350 engine and gave the car a better look. Jimbo
I used a very heavy spring (T/A wA/C), then cut 1 coil for a racer. It dropped that heavy nose a bunch and if I sat on the fender right at the headlight (I was 245#) I could make it hit the rubber bump stop. Once I added the 90/10s, I gotta say that car rode so damn nice. It would stay "up" longer when crossing intersections which took some getting used to. Once it went to the track for good I simply put all those days out of my mind. Oh yeah, it was a Camaro that weighed 3760# with the BBC in it.
