Did they actually put an 8 inch in the ranger?

an 87 ranger doesn't have an 8in or even an 8.8... as far as I know they have the 7.5. But it still is 5 by 4.5

Not sure on the exact year, but I think the '93 and up Rangers had an 8.8 with 5x5 or 5x5 1/2 pattern...the '87 I thought was a smaller pattern...

Only 4.0 equipped Rangers and 4x4's got the 8.8. All are 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.

The four bangers and some 3 L. light duty had a 7.5. If it is a Super cab, a 4X4, or a trailer tow, it should be an 8.8. The narrowest ones were pre 93.
If you get a 7.5, the bigger brakes from an 8.8 will bolt on. You need to get the backing plates, the drums, and it all interchanges.
