    Hey guys,

After some number crunching I decided that I'd be happy with a 2.75-ish gear ratio for this ford 9 inch rear im rebuilding for my tudor.

however I've yet to find anyone to offering this ratio? is it just such an odd set that they just dont list it?

or is there some terrible effect of running that gear that im not aware of?

    thanx guys

You have to find them used. They're not as easy to find as they used to be. They were installed in lots of big ford cars in the 70s.

I've put a lot of miles on the set I have in my blown big block 55 chevy

Try the ebag NASCAR sellers and you will have better luck with the odd ball gears. I just purchased a 301 for 9 inch.

  4. 2.86 are available new from Summit. There used to be a lot of 2.49 to 2.75 from Versailles out there used since everyone pulled them out of those rear ends.

I have 3 sets of 275 gears. I am using one set in a 28 chevy and the other is being used in a 27 chevy and the other is undecided at this time. two sets came out of lincoln versaille housings and both are 28 spline non posi. The other came out of a 1980 mercury monarch also non posi 28 spline. There still out there.

Grew up with a 67 LTD Galaxie 390 4v auto, had 279 gears, I think, They were 270 something. That should be close enough. If you don't find used, Randys Ring and Pinion can get any ratio you want and fast. If you do not need high priced gears get World Brand. I am running them in my T Bucket and they are fine. If you want better gears try Yukon. Randy can guide you on this stuff.

I'm running 2.75 9" in the 55 panel with 265/70-15's on the back -- great highway gears without an overdrive trans. I swap in a 3.25 posi pumpkin for towing during race season.

the 2.75 and the 3.00 are the most common stock ratios used, they are the one that get thrown away.

I have 2.50 ratio 9" gears in my 49 cad, got them out of a 1977 Tbird.

I ran a 3.08 rear w/~28" tires for many years. A recent build had the 2.79 ratio, found it to be too tall. Long winded is nice but you can overdo it.

    Tim,
Try to find someone in your area that builds rear ends for stock cars, drag cars. Chances are they have bought the 9" rear ends up for the housings. The high gears are normaly in good shape. Or ask the salvage yards who has bought up the rear ends. They are eager to sell the tall gears. I have run these tall gears for many years. In the Bonneville car we run a 2:49 Ford gear with no problems.

    Good luck
