if you think about it the girl must have been a real car junkie. name a girl these days that would ride in the back of a harsh riding, no seat, wind blowing, no heat/radio/cd/ car with two guys that didn't say much to her, let alone each other. when shes finally tired of freezing her ass off, she hops in the GTO. then gets tired of his bullshit, and splits with a biker. many an impromptu street race when you left the movie house too.
stupidly smiles from the back of the room.... kinda fits really ... isnt this just what its all about .... simple story could fit anywhere in the world .... enjoy it for what it is,,, and hope theres never a re-make pass another 6 pack
Like many 70s movies, Herbal enhancement would probably make it better, but I am not into that stuff.
The cars are the stars of this movie. As for dialog all I need to hear is the muncie whine! As for the ending, the original plan was for it to end when the 55 crashed into the truck, but some how it missed and went into the field so they just kept the film going. So it ended when they simply ran out of film.
Its all About the 55 chevy ....We all lived that movie .....Its Honest and to the point ! Like A cruize night with out the hot rods is just another Burger place ....Boring !
I remember someone saying '2 Lane' was one of best car movies ever made. I had to see the flick after that....but I felt like I wasted my time. I liked Hot Rod, with Greg Henry, Pernell Roberts much better. Simple story, but it worked for me.
My brother is a film freak, and he knew how much I love cars so he took me to the Broadway Theatre in Hamilton to see Two Lane and Bullitt - 10 year old heaven man! I don't care for Chevies at all, but even then I had an appreciation for a purpose built race car being driven on the street by two guys who didn't know anything else but racing. "The Plymouth has a Hemi and a Torqueflite" still rings in my ears. The others have it right, if you go looking for Dr. Zhivago, you will be dissapointed. If you want to see someone rowing the gears in a 10 second car, this is for you. It's like poetry for horsepower freaks.
I have the Two Lane Blacktop Criterion (sp) Collection special DVD set. It includes a DVD with the director and a bunch of film students riding in an SUV, retracing the first part of the trip from LA into Arizona. They keep going on about how the film has such a great cult following because of it's artistic merits (crap acting and crap story), but never mention the gearhead factor (bitchin' cars, Big Willie and the street racers, drag racing at Lakeland, etc.), the true reason for it's cult status. Kinda funny. Without the intrest of gearheads, this movie have all but disappeared.

This sounds like the Big Bang Theory...and "o'l chevy" sounds like Sheldon. Just kiddin' guys. "HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ONE AND ALL" ___________________________ LIFE'S A GAMBLE...LET EM' ROLL
Street racing was huge then,as were hippy chicks, drugs and the draft. What about the 70's Porno sound track in the "California Kid" film.
when i first saw the movie i was smokin and it was the coolest movie i had ever seen. the cars were great.now when i watch it (got it on dvd) its just kinda boring.and it aint even cool( imagine that.)but the cars are still great.
The movie gives a viceral sense of how that adrenelin rush felt back in the day when we were street racing. I can remember my stomach in knots and gripping the steering wheel tight waiting for my buddy to flag us to start. What a rush! I get that when I see 2LBT on film, and it just brings me back to the nostalgia of the past seen through rose colored glasses. Its a great movie in that it captures my internal dialog I had when I was a teen in 1974. Will always appreciate 2LBT for its honesty and its literal take on what it was like in the '70s. Its not the acting - its the zen like quality that's captured on film. Read Jack Kerovac's "On The Road". It reflects a similiar state of experience
This is the best statement made. The 55 is cool. The scene at the one old dragway is cool. Other than that , nothing tops American Graffiti IMHO.
I watched it the other night on Encore. I'd always seen the TV version so it was a first to hear the language. "make it 3 football fields MF and you got yourself a drag race". Weird flick, but hearing that M-22 through the home sound system is heaven.
I like it, watch it every year or so. You have to understand filmaking was not as advanced back then. My daughter is a big James Taylor fan and was really thrilled to watch this years ago. He does not relish the limelight so to watch him in anything this long was great for her. He was not famous ,or wealthy then. The other guy was in a garage band with his brothers and some friends hoping to hit it big someday" he made it". The girl ended up doing a long stint in a soap .Warren Oates has been in a lot but was vitually unknown then.Early work of people like Harry Dean Stanton are priceless. The things I like are they made a film for a tiny budget, no-one "other than GTO" has a name in the film. The cars are pretty damn real. Some decent racing scenes. If you want to watch a film with BAD acting,no plot and should never have been released watch " Billy Jack " sometime. But then again I love Quentin Tarateno films ,so I'm wierd.
HaHaHaHa. Its just a cool movie man. Hearing James Taylor run that Rock Crusher through the gears, it's like a music video with better tunes.
My sweetie could't get over James Taylor saying motherf---er thru the film. I laughed because that word is the last thing I'd expect from him. We actually watched it at a drive in my '73 Firebird with a bunch of other hot rodders, including a couple of '55s, and a lot of people had the same opinion as ol chevy. I think it would have been a great film to get in the back seat with your girlfriend...you wouldn't miss much and she'd be bored enough to let you round second base for sure!
