2 piece hub / rotar 5 on 5 ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BROCK ART STUDIO, Jun 16, 2011.

  1. I need some help for my new Bonneville car build.

Looking to find a pair of front hubs, 5 on 5 bolt pattern.
either with the "press on" disc rotor or a removable drum.
I think Lincoln, big Gm cars and some trucks used this pattern.

I have already tried cutting of the discs from an nos pair of Cadillac rotors, and they distorted too much.

I'm hoping to hear from somebody, what years they used 5 on 5, press ons.

Leads on a pair for sale appreciated.

Several years back, had an old USAC stock car with the big, wide GN drum brakes on it (5 on 5). Wanted to make it disc to run on our local short tracks so looked at the "Ed Howe" setup.

Big GM D-50 calipers, a Howe bracket, and a Toronado slip-on rotor.

    Worked great!!!

Plenty of application out there, just got to look for them and measure them up.

Also, rigged up a disc setup on a '50 Lincoln (5 on 5 1/2), used Bronco 4WD rotors on that jewel.

    Take care, K

  3. Thanks Keith.

I need a wide flange hub for the LSR wheels.
    I'll look into Toranado.
3500# Trailer "floater" axle hubs have also been suggested.

Not completely sure if I understand your question......but, that said.....I have a set of '58 Pontiac 5 on 5" hubs from which the drums have been removed that I am planning to use on a project vehicle. They have tapered roller bearings, not ball.

I think anything in the full size Pontiac, Olds or Buick lines with drum brakes from the '58 era up to the intro of discs would work........IF I understood your question correctly.

Love the Buick, by the way!

As mentioned earlier, Howe still offeres several styles of hubs. You should also check out Coleman racing products. They manufacture several as well.

If you had had the disc portion removed on a lathe, you wouldn't have had a problem.

Have you determine what spindles you'll use, or are you going to let the hub dictate that choice?

I'd suggest using the tall spindles from a 91-96 Caprice/Impala/Roadmaster/Fleetwood if you haven't settled on something. Parts are relatively cheap and plentiful. There are nice billet hubs available if you want to go that route, or you can turn down a pair of disc rotors. There are also numerous big brake kits available for the spindles.

The hubs Hnstray has are 63 , as least the ones he bought from me,63 spindles also . Pontiac started tapered bearings in 62, listed for 61 in police cars according to my book. They use the common #2 and #6 bearing but are a bit wider between the bearings than a smaller car. A 77-79 11" caddy seville rear rotor fits right over these hubs. Thats the rotor Scarebird was using on the earlier kit.

I don't know how you distorted the hub, I did that on some other rotors I needed a hub for and used a brake lathe to machine it apart and didn't have any problems.

Thanks 55chieftain for correcting the info..........guess I misunderstood the spindle/hub source...thought they were the same as the "a" arms.....good to know!

  11. Thanks guys.
CR, I know about the lathe cutting... my Logan is only a 10". I plasma cut them , with soaking, cooling rags inside the bore and it still shrunk the bearing bore .007. I was sadly surprised to find this.
I am running 65 Dodge spindles.
