i put a 200 r tranny in my 36 chevy and im am trying to get it to shift.i dont have a computer in the car. what do i do to make this work for me...thanks tom
yep, the shifting is all done based on throttle position. The wiring connector is for the torque converter lockup, which you should also get working. It does not require a computer.
There are other sets of instructions but here are Art Carr's instructions for setting the tv cable adjustments and doing a few checks. http://www.cpttransmission.com/tech_tvcable.htm
How long have you been driving around with this trans with no TV cable hooked up? If its been driven much at all, its wasted. Then there will be another "those 200R4's are shit, I had one and it blew up right away" stories floating around...
Falcongeorge hit it on the head, people dog on the 200s and i think alot of it is due to operator error. My only complaint is the price to build one, but im also a turbo buick guy so we have to have a beefy trans.
We need more information. Have you driven your '36 truck without setting up the 200 4R TV cable? Or, is the truck on stands and the trans bracket won't move from P to R/N/1/2/D/OD? Did you use a 0-300 psi Trans Pressure gauge to make sure the pressure is correct? These readings should be done right after the initial startup. What is the history of the 200 4R? Did you drive it when it was in the donor car? Bowtieoverdrives , Hesparia , Ca, has a website that will explain the correct install procedure. I installed a Bowtie Overdrives 200 4R Level II three years ago in my '68 Cam and love it.
Don't take this personal, but I can't understand why someone would go to all the trouble to install a transmission and not have a clue about the basics of how it works. No 200R4 ever was computer controlled, but as has been said if you run it long without the TV cable set properly, it will ruin the transmission. It's not hard to find basic info on how to set one up properly - if you pulled the trans from the donor yourself, hopefully you have the cable and bracket and just need to figure out how best to hook it to the carb linkage.
honestly, I dont mind those stories, helps keep the price of cores down. I never argue with people who tell me the 700r4 is the one to get...
DO NOT DRIVE IT any more until the TV cable is set properly. It is NOT a "kick down cable" it is a throttle valve cable. All of you folks calling it a "kick down cable", please stop. Without this attached, and set properly, you will destroy the transmission, in very short order, if you have not already. Keep your fingers crossed.
this poor bastard is my dad, and i wouldnt wish that curse on anybody! haha anyways he checked on it, and said there is a spot for the cable but it is not there. he said it looks like it bolts in? is that right. sorry neither of us are very familiar with these, we kinda thought it was just like most other gm trannys just put it in and go. any help would be very grateful. thanks
Go to Bowtie Overdrives http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml web site, there is a huge amount of information there for you. I have one of their 200r4s in a '37 Chevy and works great. Vergil
And I wouldn't argue with someone that wanted a 2004R over a 700R4. I would just tell them all the problems that they are going to encounter with a 2004R over the 700R4.
you have to have a piece that bolts to the throtle on the carb. to get the proper geometry for the cable to pull properly. you also need the bracket that holds the cables adjuster. they make these for different carbs. I just got some from jegs for a 700r4 goin in our 39 chevy.
You are correct... easier for me to remember 200r4 at my age, I stand corrected and chastised .... Vergil
I've been dealing with 'hobbiests' for 30 years and nothing causes more trouble than adjusting the TV cable on a 200/700. Confusion starts due to the fact that the retrofit is usually where a T-350 was. Note that there a 'kick down' or 'detent' cable AND vacuum modulator on a T-350. The cable on 200/700 serves the function of detent and modulator as in it provides PRESSURE RISE control. Trans works with OIL PRESSURE, put a gage on it and see for yourself. Not many guys would run their engine with out a pressure gage, trans needs the same respect, rarely gets it.
100% hit the nail on the head Mike. I am so tired of people thinking and calling the T.V. cable a "kick-down" cable. If you can't get that straight you sure as hell won't get a GM overdrive right.
