A man named Victor Colbert built shit like that for years in Gainesville GA, I think he hides in Macon now. I just wanted to put a name with that kind of crap! Avoid him and anything with his name attached!
you need to post the sellers name so the next guy had a heads up. just sold a quarter panel and a door for a car that was just painted for $35000! the sale of those parts are to fix the car now, add $12000 as it needed trunk floor.... bummer.
We have pretty stringent conditions to get a car on the road out here. Generally speaking cars are properly engineered before they get on the road. After seeing that, I guess it isn't such a bad thing! Adam F
I think all the builder was thinking was " can I laugh all the way to the bank with this $20 Gs " . My welding looks a lot better after seeing that mess . Lance
Man, even I could do better work than that. And I'm the guy that tack welded a friend of mine's model A truck bed to his frame without a second thought.
I hope you help your buddy out and do an additional $10,000 worth of upgrades? Wow, makes me wonder why he couldn't have had you look at it before he bought it?
First thought upon reading crooked motor mounts, exhaust tubing crossmember, and Wyoming made me think glad your buddy is now having you do a ground up restoration. Then I saw the pictures SCARY! Glad you saved him from further issues with that ticking timebomb.-Weeks
Your friend is one lucky dude having someone like you to help him out of a bad situation. Man that sucker is hacked big time. Reminds me of the 60s dirt track stock car back yard builders. As a kid I saw guys building hacked up stock cars and thought man what a piece of crap work. That picture of the split wishbone sends chills down my spine ,that is some scary shit! Looks like your friend needs to find another frame for you to start with. Your friend owes you big time!
Wow, if your buddy had 20,000 to invest in that then hopefully he has the cash to make it right. Sure is a shame that people take advantage of others that way This guy obviously wanted to get a nice cruise car just wish he would have had a car guy go with him to make sure he didnt get took this will end up being a really expensive lesson you can bet when this is over he wont get taken like this again good luck with it !!
I especially like the strap attached to the floor and trans x-member. wonder what the wiring looks like under the dash. My guess is like a big box of scrap wire.
Is that a bolt put in there to fill the gap and then welded. Shitty welds to boot.....somebody find out who built this car......then go take his tools away....that's dangerous.
its really sad that this is a part of the hobby we all love. Classic cars and hot rods are HUGE business for people that have NO business working on cars. Its the ugly side to the hobby we all love and enjoy. You friend got taken but not even for a second do I see a $20K car. I just wonder how he thought it was worth paying that much for it?? I mean seriously...he didn't see any of this before he bought it?
I don't normally post on threads like this one, but, I had to go check my calendar to make sure it is December and not April 1st. Holy Cow, what a mess! I feel bad for your friend who bought it..... Al in CT
Wow. That is one screwed up car. I just don't get what they were trying to do with those radius arms? If you are going to that much trouble swap it onto an S-10 frame instead of hacking that one up. It wouldn't be pretty, but at least it would be honest going down the road and the swap is pretty easily reversable. And the original frame could have gone with it on a flatbed for someone who could do something with it. At least the $20,000 screw job would have been a little more tolerable without everything all hacked up. I would hate to imagine it swerving around like it is.
WOW, looks like your buddy is learning about hotrods the hard way....did he get a kiss with the F_ _ king he got....BUT no one made him buy it...life lesson learned ...Look at a car before you buy it and if you don't know what your looking at get someone else to check it out....
That sucks. How did it even stay together? Good thing your there to at least fix it so he doesn't kill himself. What's the body like? Puttyville? Ebay is a thieves paradise.
I SO feel for your buddy. Due to something similar happening to me 20yrs ago with a 1967 Camaro, I developed a credo I try very hard to stick too: When at all possible, have your hand in every step of a build. Don't look at cars for what they are but what they will become once you get it. (that last part will keep you from paying too much for anything on wheels) ~Jef
Your buddy could have used the H.a.m.b. and got more than his money's worth, I feel for him. I got tore a new a-h on a truck, If at all possable my next project/finished ride will come from the men on this site.... Its not what you know, but who you know and what they know. That's what I use every time I buy. Glad he got you to "set things stright" no pun implyed.
Wow. what a peice of crap! but- that crossmember isn't exhaust tubing. it's a stock Camaro crossmember. I have seen (and own) enough of them to recognize them immediately. the "big trick" years before it was easy or cheap to purchase an aftermarket one for a tri 5 chevy was to use one of these. but a 36 for frame is about...3 and 1/2 miles too wide to even consider it. and I will agree, again, that everything else is total shite.
C'mon guys..isn't it all about using what you got laying around to build that little "somethin' special"? GeeZ...sad thing is, you're going to be the asshole that ruined a "good thang". Yep, seen it happen a million times. The messenger gets shot as the enemy slips out of town. There's one born every minute.
wow ...im thinking he got ripped off...but than again, maybe he shoulda looked better at what he was paying 20G's for..I know I would if i had that kinda change to be buying a car with.. does this guy have anymore money....ive got some junk rotting out in my back yard ive been trying to get rid of..hell i'll take 5 grand for some really nice patina'ed model a fenders and parts i heard something somewhere one time..think it went like this..." A fool and his money are soon parted"
Man that is very bad work, I guess thats an understatement along the lines of 'Viet Nam was only a police action'! Look on the bright side, even in that condition 30g would be cheap for a 36 over here! Doc.
Did he look at the car before buying it? I'd say, not to sound like a jerk, that if he didn't, there's no excuse. Somebody pointed out the car has obviously been used, and a lot, so it's not like it wasn't driving, despite being crude. There's no accounting for taste, what's acceptable to one isn't going to be to someone else. We don't' know how the car was represented when sold, or any details of the description. The seller may have thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. If it were me, I'd feel bad, but then I'd go out and fix it.
It would be worth that if it was a 3-window. Actually, that's a pretty "traditional" shit build. Spreading the gospel, and all that. You guys and your neotraditional builds need to get your own website!
