I missed this event the past two years. The coverage of it on the HAMB looked really neat. Anyone know if it will happen this year? Hopefully it's not dead. My work has conflicted previously. I'm trying hard to not let that happen again by some advance planning.
How about the Dixie Drive-In in Dayton, OH? It's nice, but not as menacing in appearance and is in a questionable side of town...but hey, it's Dayton. They even hold a Flea Market on Sundays so they HAVE to allow some clean riff-raff like the HAMB! C'mon Ryan. It's sure to get a bigger crowd being 2.5 to 3 hours north of the old spot. http://www.dixietwin.com/
Hey Ryan... have you tried the Drive-in theaters in Arkansas... here are a couple of links... http://www.kendadrivein.com/ -- Marshall, AR http://www.geocities.com/stonedrivein/ -- Mountain View, AR Both are still operating... and there are probably a few HAMBers here that could help...
I can't speak for Ryan but from what I understand most Drive-Ins have a contract with a certain movie production company and must show their movies. It's very difficult to find a Drive-In that is willing to play the movie you want.
Well, regardless of what happens this year I enjoyed last years and got to meet some really cool people. One of the best I attended last year. Thanks for giving us a great show, Boss! Brian
Bet I could find one over in my neck of the woods. I have a green light to do another hotrod movie night from the owner of three drive-in movie theatres in socal and they own the Starlight in GA too. Oh this is in the spring time.
There are a couple Midway Drive-in theaters here in Illinois. I've been to the one in Sterling with my Henry J. The only problem with it is they dont have the window speakers and my henry J doesn't have a radio. sooo... I know they have a site. I just havent searched it yet. I think it's Midwaydrive-in.com or something.. not sure But you could check with them about it. They might be up for it. who knows. That place has a gravel lot, I'm not sure if that is how most are, but it was fun, the j was kickin up dust like at the Pileup, haha.
I'm not trying to step on toes or cause something that is never going to start up or even headaches for Ryan. Man, I know last years event was and the rain really ****s. Looong shot. I know (kinda sortof in a nod when you happen to meet way) the owner of the local drive in here. (Look up Jungle Drive In on the Drive in sites) Parkersburg WV. It's not an hour from the other place. Not as retro outside but it's the real deal. It's secluded and out of town. (but 5 minutes from Rt77) I do have an in with the local hotel owner. It would just be nice to keep something on this end of the world. If anyone wants me to check further, PM me. If not, I'll drop it from here.
You could all come up to the Oxford Drive-in here in SW Ontario out side Woodstock about 2 hr's from Detroit. Great old place and on Sat.'s if you show up in a old car you get in for free.
http://www.themidwaydrivein.net/directions.php http://www.midwaydrivein.com/ Here's the skyview drive-theaters http://www.driveinmovie.com/WI.htm
We have an OLD drive-in up here in Michigan, that told us if we wanted to do a hot rod event, they can get almost any movie for us. I'll call them tomorrow.
This might be of some use: http://blog.openaircinema.us/blog/ But, seriously, might be cool to think a little hot rod to solve this problem. What about a farm field, the blank side of a barn and hang some canvas or white paint, a rented digital projector and a laptop, some extension cords, a low-fi broadcast or speaker set up, some pot luck BBQ's, snacks/drinks and some low budget fun? All preceded by a "whoever comes" afternoon car show gathering followed up by the movie. What about instead of a movie, it is a collection of cool old hot rod shorts or historical car flicks of interest? Can show whatever you want that you can download to a hard-drive and as long as you don't intend to profit off any of it, I don't think any copyright stuff, if any anyway, will apply.
I agree. I went the past two years and drove my '64 Cadillac both years. We all had a blast even though it rained last years and there wasn't much of a movie to see... understandable why. I always look foward to driving out to West Virginia from Indy each time and it would be nice to keep it around that area... if it would happen again that is. If not, well it was fun and alot of memories were made at that event.
Has the saying "use it or lose it" ever been more fitting. That should be a lesson for myself to get off my lazy ***! I hope to buy a projector this summer and hold my own small version of the Cinematic once a month in my back yard. Or that's the plan at least. Don't give up on this baby RYAN!
Ryan, Just suggestions here.... I realize the work you did in picking and finding a willing drive-in that was centrally located, so Northern and Southern Hambers could make it. I think the fact that this drive-in was located in one of the most remote areas in the state hurt attendance. If you read the Ohio Hamber thread you can see how infiltrated this area is with Hotrodders and Hambers. I think the idea of a Drive-in is great but it too is kinda seclusive for a day gathering. Three suggestions.... 1. Pick an area that has more of a hamber populated area. (Hambers per sq mile) Northeast or NorthCentral Ohio. 2. Still call it the "Cinematic" but have the gathering at a more visible area with an evening "only" at a Drive-in. I can still make a trip over to the oldest one in Ohio and try to negotiate... Lynn Drive in www.lynndrivein.com/info.html I was talking to the second generation son two years ago and he is a car nut. 3. Having it close to populations will also make the weekend fun to share our cars with others outside of the Hamb group during that time. I hate to See the only right coast Hamb related function fall by the wayside. I know you put alot of work into this and the frustration you went through last year with problems and the rain to boot. So I don't blame you for taking a break from this. These suggestions are for a time you may reconsider another eastern Hamb get together.
I loved this show and would be willing to travel to go to another one. Anything I can do to help make it happen just hollar. Was the most fun my wife had at a car even ever she said.
I'm definitely willing to go back to the Lynn drive in people and talk with them again. Last time we tried it seemed to be too short of notice to get things in order. Like Petejoe said, there are TONS of car people in this area (lots traditionally minded) so I'm sure packing the place would be no problem. FWIW, I loved last year. How many people have watched a movie at a drive-in in the Lazy 8?
Petejoe and Chevygirl said it best. Lot's of us folks in NE Ohio love this kind of stuff, but good events are minimal at best.
Basicly thats the jest of it. There are Drive-Ins out there that will work an extra film into the line up for special occasions. Cousin Chris the owner of the Judy Drive-In in Mt. Sterling KY has done special nights for all kinds of occasions. One that comes to mind is adding the film "My Dog Skip" as a extra to promote and help the local K-9 unit. It is really hard to get a drive-in owner to completely forego their usual fair to do just Hot Rod movies. Even more so, if they are a single screen theater. After all once the hot rods are gone, the owner still has to deal with his usual customer base. Piss off the families and well, your screen will go dark in short order. Thats why we do our auto related event on the Sunday before Labor Day, he's usually not scheduled to be open that night so it doesn't hurt his business one bit. We've been doing our Drive-In show for a few years now, so if anyone needs help just ask and I'll do what I can.
I think it's more of a contractual issue then a willing to issue. Most are willing to add it to the lineup AFTER the movies they are contractually obligated to show, unless of course an off night is choosen like your Sunday. A theather might be able to fly under the radar and not follow their contractual obligations if the event is low keyed. A HAMB event is not really low keyed in my opinion.
The Lynn drive in is easy to find and get to. It is a pretty cool drive-in. Hotels and plenty to eat near by. If there is still an interest and it doesn't work, I'm still willing to check the local one. (just shy of 3 hours South of downtown Cleveland)
I'm in a MC club with the guy who owns the drive in in Dodge City KS. It has a 300 car capacity, and window speakers. It would be fairly centrally located in the states, although I don't know if there are very many HAMBer's in the immediate area. If there's any interest in it, I could talk to him about a hot rod event there...... Just let me know
It RAINED last year!!!!???? Well, I'll be darned....guess me, Hannah, the Indy crew along with the Road Rockets was having too much FUN to care or notice!!!I don't recall anyone DROWING so it didn't rain too hard...no Noah sightings either....bunch of LIGHTWEIGHTS!!!
