The TRJ article showing the car in bare metal gave me much more respect for this car and the build. Normally, overrestored and super high dollar build cars don't do all that much for me, but this seems like a pretty deserving winner.

    Thanks for the photos.

NICE car! I for one, cannot wait to see it all buttoned up and sitting on the ground.
I freakin' hate most "car show mode, all opened up so the judges can see it" displays....

Howzabout, in 2 day shows, 1st day is open and the second day, folks can choose to close up their car?

    Whatever.

AWESOME new age resto HOT ROD though......regardless!

a traditional lookin car wins the Riddler? while its a nice looking car knowing it won the Riddler is like your mom saying, "Dude." Its cool but it just doesnt quite fit right.

    Still a very nice car.

  7. It was my favorate out of the great 8, I would also like to see it on the ground.

Exactly. Doesn't most of the close inspection judging happen after hours anyways? If so there is really no reason to force a builder to open up his car when displaying other than his own desire to display the workmanship not normally seen on a closed car. Pretty cool looking car though.

I generally like it, which surprises me...I usually don't like much alteration to a '32. I've always thought the B400 was the only ugly '32, and this really cleans the thing up. Recast this way, the awkward rear top area now looks good both in terms of the rear curve and in terms of resolving the misfit of rear quarter windows to body shape in the stocker. The extra forward curve provided by the 3w doors also somehow helps tie the rather busy B400 body profile together. The shortening of the grill shell is visually awkward, though, grill is too short for a good side curve transition. Some things shouldn't be meddled with, even though that's probably almost a requirement for the Ridler.

Here's what Doug Cooper had to say about the plans for the car.

"It's not going to be autocrossed!!!!!!!!!!!!! it might sit at the autocross... but it will be driven. I don't collect art, I am a car enthusiast!"

"Alan and I have to discuss what events we are going to attend with the car this year...We will attend Goodguys Columbus, NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Shades of the Past and SEMA other than that???"

Thank you, that car is spectacular! My buddy Doug Jerger (Squeeg's Kustoms) wrapped up a black '32 roadster about 6 months ago that could be it's cousin! Although this B-400/ish car is over the top in subtle stuff! Great job, sweet car.

Only pic I have of the roadster.....

Congratulations Doug, and thanks for this outstanding shot,of such a beautiful car. The "traditional" and "modern" styling, blended together so incredibly well,is very inspirational. You will notice, the crowd on here is a challenging bunch to please, as we're all about "traditional",but that certainly fits the bill, in a modern rendition of a "Hot Rod". Thank You, and welcome to the HAMB.

That is easily the most beautiful B-400 I've ever laid eyes on. Congrats to Alan and the owner. Also the most outstanding Riddler in years.

Whats next? ha... driving it and enjoying I bet. Any other projects?

Mike, Yes it's going to get driven and go to a bunch of outdoor and indoor events thios year.
Alan and I have several other projects in the works the ones that the Guys on the HAMB will like are all 32's. I've accumulated a bunch of original sheetmetal over the years... a five window, a sedan and a couple of three windows. The five window is the next street rod. It's already stripped and the frame is built, need to pick an engine, trans and all the detail stuff. It will have a lot of 60's Indy car influence...

beautiful car, it was my pick too! I read about it on the flight to Detroit in RJ, could'nt wait to see it. I looked at it for hours, (sorry for the drool on the front fenders,I wiped most of it up) I hung around till closing Sunday to see if you won or not. Congratulations!! See you in Columbus on the pavement! Dale

I wanted to use Yancys photo to identify all the crew at Johnsons Hot Rod Shop.
starting on the top row left to right: Heath, Anthony, Kelvin, Chris, Shane, Greg.
Bottom row left to right: Dino, Vinny, Doug Cooper, My wife Michele, Angie Johnson and Alan Johnson

I would like to thank everyone that perservered through this build, the long hours for months on end, 7 days a week. Not getting to go home and sleep in your own beds some nights and many of your wifes coming to the shop to visit and bring meals for the crew. I thank them for putting up with the demands to get this project done. Alans dad jumping in, doing everything he could to help make sure the car got finished on time and his mom making dinner for the shop.
Angie got all the hats, t-shirts, pull overs and jackets coordinated, colors picked out and made sure they were embroidered. Made several trips to drop them off and pick them up. She coordinated the manufacturing and design of the sign, the blueprint, the video and the build book.

It took an entire team to get it all done... from the car design and thought it takes to coordinate a build of this caliber to keeping the team motivated and focused {Alan} to the paint [Greg] to the machine work [Heath] to the metal work [Tony{not in picture}, Vinny, Dino] to getting every single part....Shipping, receiving ordering it on time and the back and forth to the plater, the polisher, the wheel company, the electronics for the ignition, radio, nuts and bolts, handling every single part on the car {Shane] and every other task necessary to get this car done, body work, assembly test fitting fabrication wet sanding, the list goes on and on..[Anthony, Kelvin and Chris]

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE ON THE CREW AND ALL OF THE OTHERS THAT SHOWED UP AT THE SHOP TO HELP OUT AND CHIP IN ON THEIR OWN TIME THE MANUFACTURERS THAT PROVIDED PARTS AND THE COMPANIES AND INDIVIDUALS THAT PROVIDED SERVICES TO GET THIS PROJECT DONE ON TIME.

I APPRECIATE EVERYTHING EVERYONE DID TO GET THIS CAR BUILT AND TO DETROIT AND THE QUALITY OF THE EFFORT SHOWED IN THE RESULT...
THE RIDLER AWARD!!!! THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH

    SINCERELY, DOUG COOPER

Well said, and well done at the show.

That's really nice to see an owner show so much appreciation for the builder and his crew.

Thank You! Alan, Angie and everyone at JHRS worked so hard and long on this project it's very important to me to acknowledge and thank them for all their effort. I wish I would have thought to bring the entire crew up on the stage at the awards presentation, that would have been great...they deserve all the accolades.
