1. I was born in 1955, and immersed myself in the hobby by age 8. I've had between 5 and 600 older cars, so I've been fairly deep in the midst of this hobby, and have never heard the term "shoebox" used on 49-51 Fords until around 7(?) yrs ago. But, I have heard it used for Tri-5 Chevy's for MANY years before that. So, if they called the Fords "shoeboxes" in the 50's, it sure went away by the mid 60's, and stayed away for a LONG TIME

Back to the BJ! I like to watch it as I can...it's entertainment with cars. One of these years I'll get down there for it. I have a son in Chandler, but have never been there at that time due to work.

And I always look forward to this thread at this time of year also.....it's entertainment!

I thought I'd put a face to how I feel about the B-J comments found here. The words may cause some to, well, whatever...

I watch the Barrett-Jackson any time it’s on, live or reruns. Good background noise of nothing else, and better than the other **** these days. I like to see the cars I sold years ago for hundreds now going for tens of thousands.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

The best thing about the Barrett-Jackson is that they got some guys who actually know something about the cars. That’s fun to watch because these guys are good. Originally they had that English idiot who knew nothing about American cars (but always liked the paint), and also there was Brock Yates. What a disappointment he was. A real car buff, but didn’t know much more that the Englishman. What a surprise. I always thought Brock was one of us, but he sure didn’t know anything about hot rods, and less about muscle cars.

Back in the 50’s and early 60’s we never called the Fords ‘shoeboxes’; we never called a three carb set-up ‘tri-powers’ (we called them ‘three-twos’ or ‘three deuces’); I never heard the term ‘tri-fives’ until a couple of years ago, and lots more of these…but things change, so what.

The trend I don’t like is the restored 50’s cars being loaded up with all the factory optional chrome accessory junk. The extra bumper guards and bumper end trim, extra antennas, bigger hood ornaments, factory (not custom) fender skirts, and worst of all the dreaded continental kit. A ’55 Chevy with all that junk would have been laughed out of the drive-in. Having a brand new from the dealer ’55 with all junk meant your dad had money. We just never had that stuff on our cars. Drags had started by then, and a car at the drags with a continental kit was pretty rare – but not unheard of. I do remember seeing a couple of cars at the drags with sun visors. Think about that.

    Just my opinions …

lol, let it go. Yeah I'm not old enough either but all the old timers I grew up with referred to the tri-5's as shoeboxes. Maybe you just needed to get out more.:D

I dont know about Magnantes awesome memory. Ever seen him looking in his little notebook before talking ? I believe he researches all that "memory" only to read it back on Tv like he is some sort of wizard. Its still interesting to me hearing all the trivia he gathers up. Its just a car show where people with more money then brains show their @ss on nationwide TV. Might just as well have them all come up on stage, drop their pants and the longest one wins. Its just long co*king with money instead of hose.

I had a '57 Chevy in the 60's and they were called shoeboxes. I had (and have) a '51 ford in the 90's and 00's and they are called shoeboxes. Both are right.

Ahhh - a charter member of the Terminally Self Righteous Club..:D Your original quote was "Were you there in the fiftyes (sic) when we called the 49-51 Fords shoe boxes. No you were not even born yet so don't try to tell us how it was". I'm trying to figure out how "there in the fifteyes (sic)" and "No you were not even born yet" are compatible with "Date of birth 55 Like I sayed (sic) he was not born yet".

I think you need to make up your mind whether "Date of birth 55" would indicate that Groucho was around in the "fiftyes" or not. Chronology 101 cl***es perhaps? But rather than exercising prudence by staying silent, you are just digging yourself deeper - ho hum....

Now 'back to the original program after this word from our sponsors'....
