Event Coverage 2017 AMBR Contenders

Now I understand why the roof is disproportionally undersize. They had to do that to make it fit. Nice trick, but it really makes the car look awkward when up.

 

Thanks for compiling and posting the pictures! I like several of them, but that "periwinkle" RPU may be my favorite.

 

Mine as well, it had me at the cycle fenders and full wheel covers. But, looks to be a pretty terrific line-up from the photos. Nothing that made me immediately gasp out an "Eeewwww yuck", like happens most years.

 

I like the Muroc Roadster too Ryan, I think their theme is Muroc 1938, and to me it's remanesent of
Eldon Haas's record setting roadster.

 

Wow. Like a lot of you I feel it's a great line up this year. Not a stupid 20" billet rim in the bunch! Other then the 37, Packard and Dodge they look pretty much stock bodies, it's going to come down to build quality, the details instead of massive customizing (quality v/s quantity) if that make sense. I have a hard time picking out my favorite. Wish I could be there, bet one could spend hours digesting all the small little details.
The Packard makes me think of how I feel about the 57/59 Ford Skyliner, neat trick to make the top fold in but the big butt needed to make it work throws the whole car's proportions off.

Yep, the car just isn't the right proportions.

I'd like to see more of the custom Dodge....

 

My vote is for Don Lindfor's RPU. 3 reasons. I love RPU's, obviously, Don is a good friend, and he built that beautiful roadster in his own garage with his own two hands. Paying a shop to build an AMBR car is OK, but building it yourself is just plain is a whole 'nother level of cool in my book. Great job Don!

I'm going to have to see them in person tomorrow and Saturday. Pictures don't always do justice, but none of them are blowing my socks off. They all look to be excellent quality, but '40s traditional isn't my preferred style. I think seeing them in person will change my mind.

 

I like this one too. The fact that it's actually home-built is icing on the cake...

I saw this one last summer at the Strangers show at "History Park" in San Jose. cool!

 

It is always exciting to see the AMBR Contenders each year. Such a culmination of thought, artistry and talent. As a judge I would be hard pressed to pick the best, as there is so much beauty this year.
If I were going for purely traditional, Hetfield's "Blackjack" and Grant's "Muroc" would be the top picks. Although Hawley's "Back in 47" also is right there.
Dr Dan's "Hill Country Flyer" is gorgeous, though it begs the question is that hue to passe to be a winner in today's climate?
On a pure build beauty and uniqueness level Bruce Wanta's "Mulholland Speedster" seems at the top of the game. As a side note, I feel Troy's time has arrived. Also can very traditional 32's win two years in a row?

I like a lot of the cool features of this car and I understand why the paint is what it is (Himsl fade), but to me the paint doesn't do the rest of the car justice. Then again, nobody asked me.

 

Blackjack.....would look good in my garage.

 

'34 Phaeton for me. Doesn't get any prettier!

 

The Wanta Khardashian-styled Speedster has it over all the others...Posterior Plus!

Wow awesome line up and dig the first one 29 roadster and Pheaton and probably why I never traded it off. The 32 roadsters are killer and in person they have to be like jewelry

 

"Coachbuilt" just doesn't ring my bell. But it must be a good living.
