    can you use a 216 cylinder head 3835517 on a 1938 216 block?

Best gasket shows a head gasket for a 1937-1953 216”. I don’t know Chevrolet 6 head numbers but if has only the 2 hood nuts for the rocker cover on the top I would say yes. If it has screws on a flat edge around the perimeter for a cover, I would say no.

It's a matter of what pistons you're using. The '37-'40 engines had pistons with rounded domes similar to that of a Ford flathead, while the '41-'53 engines used flat top pistons.
