I have a little problem. I bought a 216 1948 intake to replace the stock intake on my 52. Turns out the stud spacings are larger and my Rochester B doesn't fit anymore. I don't want to elongate the holes to fit the spacings. So my question is should I keep the intake and find a carb that fits the intake? If so which ones would be good, and is the linkage all that different from the Rochester B's? Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.
    Frank.

I wouldn't elongate the holes. Even if you could get the carb to fit, the main issue, I think, is that those carb base gaskets had so little material around the perimeter. Find a carb to fit. Also be aware that that little hole in the bottom of the carb base is a vacuum signal feed to the idle-circuit. The gasket has to have a matching hole or slot. This setup is prone to vacuum leaks. Do it right. Don't clog that idle-circuit feed hole with gasket-sealer either. Good luck.

Thanks for the offer Mist, but the thing is the reason I changed the intake was because the old exhaust was broken. I have the right intake. The exhaust I bought came with the intake. When I put the exhaust into the engine the 52 stock intake studs wouldn't fit on the 48 exhaust, so i just put the intake that i bought with the exhaust and that's where i am right now.

Aha. Drats...missed it by that much. Hey Frank, the mis-match has me wondering if you got ahold of a 235 intake and exhaust. The 216 and 235 intake and exhaust manifolds will bolt up, but the the ports are smaller on the 216. It's not a good idea to install a 216 setup on a 235, 'cause it'll restrict flow. I suppose it's OK to put the 235 setup on a 216 though. - Rick

Nevermind. Just re-read your post. I gotta pay closer attention. The setup you bought is a '48. Got it. Your '52 carb bolt pattern is too big. Makes sense. Wish we were closer. I've got some rebuildable carbs. - Rick

It doesn't sound like you bought a 216 exh/int., it sounds like you bought a 235 exh/int. Did the (3) intake rings fit snug in the new intake when you replaced it? If it is the 235 and you don't want to bother with the intakes just find yourself a good 51-52 manual shift 235 Rochester B model carb. which will have the correct spacing and linkages should work fine.

Wait...I think I had it right the first time. The bolt-pattern on your new intake is bigger than your carb, right? I think you bought a 235 intake and exhaust.

hahahah after I posted I got to reading your post and had to second guess myself. Ha! Yeah a '48 exhaust will have the flange exit straight down and a 49-52 216 is angled to the rear just like a 235.

Hey Vintage Iron, if Frank bought the 235-style intake, then he can't use the sealing-rings, correct? That's not so good. - Rick

No. I had to enlarge the rings a bit to make them fit.

I always see someone selling old aftermarket intakes on ebay and listing them as "216,235,and 261". The simple fact is, whether it's factory or aftermarket, 216 intakes are not interchangeable with 235's-261's. And don't forget that Chevy made a 235 based on the 216 from 1950 or 51 to 53. 1954 was a all-new 235. Anyways, always use the correct parts, don't do a "mickey mouse" job.
