I got a 50 truck with a stuck 216...The seller claimed they tried all sorts of tricks and it's stuck solid, engine needs to come out. I got under the truck, got a long crow bar on the flywheel teeth and the clutch housing as the fulcrum.. The engine spun over...It's all about leverage and a long bar on the damper has far less leverage...Uh, dont break off the flywheel teeth... In my case, the engine ran but smoked because of of a rust line left in the cylinders... Go for the 235 swap if you can find a good runner....The later 230/250 requires nrarly as much change as a V8.. Does the steering box need to be moved for a SBC ?
Couple options with swapping a 235 or 261 in with the front mount. You can either modify the frame for side mounts, some really nice pre made side mount kits available on pee-bay or you can drill and tap the front of the engine and keep the front mount. either option has been done a bunch of times and both options work well. when I swapped the 261 into my 50 I bought the side mount kit off the ‘bay snd went that route and as far as the longer water pump a just pushed my flags back got a pulley snd ran it. there are pump relocation plates to use the earlier pumps and all sorts of stuff. nothing horribly hard or expensive on an inline. I really like inline 6’s !!
Have to show you guys what we found! Went and grabbed this gem for the car project. Thanks for the input fellas.
This donor 235 has the front mounts, is there any advantages to keeping them or adapting the mid mounts?
The advantage is it looks original and you don’t need to weld up side mounts to your frame. the work to drill and tap the front of the engine is about the same as welding up the side mounts So work wise it’ll be the same, just different final look is all. I think the side mounts are a better way to go as it hold the engine better. But lots of front mount 216 and early 235’s running around with no issues .
*Update* Just got the 235 head back from the engine shop. Installed hardened valve seats while it was out/accessible. Still doing our due diligence on research for motor mounts. Seems like we got an odd year ('56) 235. Looks as though we can go either way of modify block to fit ch***is, or modify ch***is to fit block? I believe the plan, for now, is to keep the 3 spd with torque tube just to get it back on the road. Took the radiator in to get checked and it needs replaced, any recommendations on an aluminum unit? -Thanks
You had front mounts before, I’d stick with them. I recall mention in similar year pickups, the 235 water pump and pulleys stick out further. May not be an issue in a car though. Someone will shed some light.
