23 T Bucket

    where to mount my vega steering box,on frame,for cross steering
    does the pitman arm need to be level with the steering ,arm,and how far up on the frome should i mount it


    thanks all,i looked at Speedway chassis and they have vega cross steer on their tbucket,
    i have the box,and steering arms already,they came with the project

    The draglink should be level with the tierod at normal ride height and parallel to it when looking straight down.
    You can fudge it a little bit as far as parallel when looking down...but level with the tierod is very important as far as bumpsteer goes. Not level will mean some amount of bumpsteer.

    All that aside...are you sure you have room to cross steer with a Vega box on a 23 sized frame?
    They aren't usually very wide and you might get some engine interference with the box and the steering shaft.
    Do a full mock up to be sure!

    I don't think Spirit "Cross steers" with a Vega box.
    I believe they mount it to use a drag link along the side of the frame to a slingshot arm on the left spindle...like others use a Corvair box.

    Actual cross steer is gonna be full of headaches...if he is using a "normal" T style homebuilt or aftermarket frame. (IMO :()

    Mount a reversed corvair or vega box on top of frame rail just in front of the firewall.....with the drag link going to the driver side front wheel.

    You shouldn't edit your original post to add info...just do a reply to your own post as anyone else would!
    Makes it MUCH easier for anyone trying to help to keep track of the conversation and how its progressing!

    I just looked at the Speedway site and they do have a cross steer setup AND it looks like it will fit easily in an unstretched frame!
    I didn't think it would fit so nice!
    Every day you learn something new is a good day!!! LOL

    I'd still suggest you mock things up before you commit to engine placement etc and then keep the draglink level with the tierod height and as parallel as possible.
    After that its as simple as routing your steering rod to the box.
    Do that as close to how Speedway does theirs and you should be good to go!!!
    They likely offer an assembly designed just for this...might be cheaper than getting it piecemeal.

    Better put engine and exhaust manifold/ headers in chassis, to see if there is room to get a steering shaft to the steering box. Might be kind of tight there.

    i believe ill have room, i going to run a straight 6 chevy motor...but will mock it all up before

    Been there tried it.can be done,but side steer is much easier and gives you lots of ground clearance.

    I am currently building a bucket with a Vega box. As others have mentioned, make sure you have room for everything! I had my engine and transmission mounts already in, then I tried to set up steering after the fact. I found out my steering box would hit my motor mount (I was using a Hurst front mount), so I had to re-do it all haha. Also as mentioned, make sure your steering shaft (the one connecting your column to the box) has room under your motor mount. You should be able to run it along side the frame. Another thing to consider is the use of a panhard bar. I have read the cross steer setup can create bump steer, but I have no first hand experience of this (many say it's fine to go w/out one, but I figured I'd set one up so I wouldn't regret it later).     Yup. Some things are left simple, when it comes to T Buckets.
     
  14. I put a reversed corvair up by the firewall for side steer. Real easy and work well. No worry for a panhard bar either.
