Here recently, my 235 has an intermittent bog while driving. It idles fine and has great throttle response while in neutral. Get her out on the road, usually running along at a steady 30-40mph she'll randomly start loading up, as if I pulled the manual choke out. You can push in the clutch while it's bogging and it goes back to idling fine and will rev up fine. Ease off the clutch and she'll be ok for a little while and then start loading up again. Plugs are always black/sooty afterwards, so it's not starving for fuel, it's suddenly getting too much. The carb was rebuilt a few months back(I even swapped on another fresh carb I had on the shelf and no change). I had already been planning on upgrading to an HEI distributor, so I went ahead and ordered/installed one and she still bogs down on me. I've triple checked the timing. Could a intake manifold leak cause this problem? I sprayed wd40 around the intake gaskets and didn't get any noticeable rise in RPM, but I can't get to the bottom of them very well, so purhaps I have a leak down there. Any other ideas would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

On my 54, I was getting trash from the fuel pump stuck under the needle seat in the carb. Random flooding would ensue, and if I revved the engine enough, it would clear up. Installing a fuel filter between pump and carb resolved the issue.

I've tried two different carbs on it and put fresh filters with both. I've even pulled both carbs back apart and blew through all the ports/passages in them. The intake bolts were a little loose, so I snugged them all back down and sprayed wd40 around the intake gaskets afterwards and didn't get an rpm change. This weekend I'll swap in some fresh intake/exhaust gaskets anyway. At this point, it's the only thing I can think it could be.
