Pay the 40 bucks. The timing marks are not on the balancer,There is a hole in the front of the bell housing on the passenger side W/ the timing marks on the fly wheel.
TIMING: get under the hood... look down by the starter, there's a hole in the bell-housing with a little pointer sticking down (it points towards the ground).... rotate the engine by hand while shining a flash light so you can see the flywheel spin through that opening in the bell-housing. You're looking for a "ball" in the forward facing surface of the flywheel. when you find that, grab your white-out and paint that sucker white!!!! rotate the engine again until you feel the resisitance of the compression stroke... when you do and that white ball in the flywheel comes around and lines up with the pointer in the bell-housing then you know that you are at TDC- rotate your distributor until the points just crack and you should at least be able to get the sucker started. From there on out, you can do it by ear.... As far as the Vacuum advance, I'd love to know where you found them for 40.00... everywhere I've found (three times in 8 years) has wanted upwards of 60 bones for them.... I don't see why you couldn't use any other pot that would perform the same function ... but it will be trial and error just like anything else is when adapting different parts to it.... heck... why not just get and MSD ignition for the thing and never sweat the vacuum advance Mark-Anthony
Timing Specs: Set the octane selector at 0. Then loosen the CLAMP, not the bolt for the octane selector, and set the distributor to TDC @ 400-450 RPM. Tighten clamp. Then set the octane selector, set for slight ping while accelerating with wide open throttle. Just get the correct vac. advance unit for the engine. Have you tried NAPA? I've seen them on Ebay also for reasonable $$. Billy
von... i'm pick in up a 59 with a straight 6 in it..mostly for parts ..if ya want i can check out the dist..let me know..also if ya need any other parts..trucks kinda rough but some good parts.. i'm gonna use the heater parts for mine and the dash.. good luck tim
MSD... I don't know how I saw it, I was rolling through some catalogs or something, saw it and my heart went pitter patter until I saw the price.... It's one of those things way down the road for my Chevy.....but for now I'll keep screwing around with my dual point distributor I'm drawing up (too many distributors for the car, too much time @ lunch) The manual is an excellent idea, esp the shop manual... The Car Shop out here in Orange CA, had them for $10.00 a bit ago... The other thing that is great are old Chiltons manuals.. my grandfather had the set from '38 up to '68 and they have been invaluable for every car I've messed about with. MA
shop manuals are $20 new and you can get them for less than $10 on ebay sometimes. I believe that www.fillingstation.com has them for $40
Langdon's Stivebolt has a modified S-10 v6 electronic distributor that drops in. That's what I am using in my '54. Works good and no more points. about $160-170. r
What year is your 235? I've got two for late fifties and at least one for 63 to 65. All NOS. Photos on request.
