Betcha got a leak in the intake gaskets somewhere. Tricky to get those sum*****es to seal sometimes! (Why I'm such a fan of the later integral head 250s! ) Sometimes, you can solve the problem by cranking the intake bolts down a bit more... ...but don't overlook the obvious...vacuum line or plug off somewhere, adjustment screws on the carb disturbed, etc. Also chack your carb base to be sure it's tight and that the gasket there is sealing.
Sounds just like a leaky intake... Had an old Nova that would run and idle fine while the choke was on...but two blocks away you had to drive it with two feet to keep it running. I was used to it, and it was just a $70 beater, so I gave up trying to get the intake to seal. I sold the car to a kid for $50 who lived in a rough neighborhood and had alot of trouble with local gang types who had stolen his last three cars. They took the Nova twice, and both times he found it at the end of his block...if you didn't know how to drive that car, it would die quickly and not restart easily!!! He kept the car for like two years and the hoodlums gave up trying to steal it!!!
I dunno might be some shady hillbillys 'round yer parts lookin' ta score a new pick-em-up truck... ...AND a new deck and ceptic tank all at the same time!!! I'd insure it to the hilt and buy a mean dog!
Sure sounds like a vacuum leak. We use spray "Gum Cutter"(carb cleaner) with the plastic tube to sray around the carb base and intake manifold to find any leaks. The idle will pick up if you spray near a leak. Don't forget to check any va***m hoses to the wipers etc. If your engine is all painted and polished use starting fluid it's not that hard on the pretty stuff.
[ QUOTE ] I am wondering where to start looking for the problem. Is it most likely a vacuum leak, or did I get some dirt in the carb? Fuel pump maybe?... any help would be appreciated. VT. [/ QUOTE ] i had a problem with my 235 in my '53 chebby,,,it was the thick spacer between the carb and the intake it had a crack in it!i made one outta some thick plywood and it work AWSOME..the guy i sold the car to still has it under the carb...just a thought
ya uhh its a few years ago.lets see,,,i used a piece of plywood that was layin around..it looked like it was made of a few layers of wood and looked real solid[im not a carpenter so i dont know wood} i cut it out with a skill saw,and drilled out the holes for mounting it,,i think it was the same thickness as the actual spacer under the carb..i used my pops belt sander to sand it smooth and make sure it was level..i sanded the sides to for looks...i used some of that gasket paper to put under carb, and under the wood..it took an intire 15 minutes to make and it worked out great and didnt cost a dime..i dunno it worked for me and i drove it daily for 5 years like that,,, good luck...use your spacer to trace out the shape on the wood...
Hack I see the resemblance......[deliverance???]......Hay VNO T-are ya drivin the 58relic up my way or some latemodel garbage?
