I have a 139 tooth, 6 volts starter and flywheel. I want to change from the small clutch 9 1/4 to the larger 10 1/2 . My replacement flywheel was a 168 tooth ring gear so I had it changed to 139 tooth ring gear. Now my problem is that the outside diameter of the new wheel with 139 tooth ring gear is 3/16 larger which does not allow the 6volt starter to engage . ( apparently all 139 are not the same). Do I go back to the 168 tooth and a 12 volt starter, or did I just get a bad 139 tooth ring gear? I want to keep the foot pedal but I can accomplish that another way. Any ideas??

Get a proper 12 volt flywheel. Look for one from a '55-up 3/4 ton or larger truck for the larger clutches.

12 volt starters from '55-57 trucks were still available with foot start.
