HEY! I was adjusting the lifters over the weekend on my 1952 Chevy with a 1960 235 due to the fact that they sounded like a noisy typewriter. All I can figure is the previous owner adjusted them like they were solid lifters not hydraulic after installing a Howard cam. I realized during the process that part of the problem was two of the lifters did not hold pressure. Not a biggie-- I figured... So the motor came apart and the lifters were ordered. I got the lifters today and they would work perfect IF THEY FIT!! All the listings I could find call for .842 so thats what I got. Turns out the lifters in the motor are .99 and 2 5/16" tall. I can't find anything about lifters that big so I'm turning to you guys for help!! JESSE
According to the Seal Power book that I have, they should be all the same from 50-62 for hydraulic. There was a difference in solids between 55 and 56. It sounds like someone sold you the wrong lifters.
How much oil were you getting to the top of the engine? I've had problems getting enough oil up there, especially on an older engines.
I believe the only Chevy lifter measuring larger than the .841" was the one used in the 235" with a standard shift setup (ca. 1955 and earlier)?? They measure somewhere around .900", not 100% certain however! Melling helped with this info! Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. The part number for these lifters was JB-708 but have been superceded by a JB-887. Good luck!!
Thanks for all the info! I stopped over at the machine shop down the street from work yesterday and ran through his books. We came up with the same Sealed Power part number HT-761 so that's what I went with.
That's the part number that was in my book as well; which is for 1950-1962. What part number were you trying to use before, that didn't fit?
Originally I ordered 12 comp cam lifters from Summit part number 99277-2 I entered in the appropriate info and that's the number they gave me. They are usually spot on and there site is easier to use than others so I can't hold it against them. Just puts me back a few days.
Summits application guide must be wrong. Here is what Crane says that they fit: http://www.cranecams.com/product/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=24796
