I have never manged to get the timing right when its running so i warm it up and do a static check. After its fairly warm but not too hot take out the number one spark plug and put your thumb over the hole and have your buddy or whatever turn the motor over until it blows your thumb back a little (you might have to move the crank to get it right on top dead center) then take off the distributer cap and make sure the rotor is pointing strait to the number one point on the cap. Good luck
