I just bought an Offy duel carb intake from a fellow hamber, and he told me it was for a 235. When i got it in the mail yesterday it came in an Offy box that said it was a 235 intake. It is brand new with all the linkage, but when i went to bolt it to the stock exhaust manifold the the two studs in the exhaust manifold were too close together to fit in the bolt holes along the center port of the intake. My first thoughts were its a 216 manifold so i grabbed the intake port rings to see if they fit and sure enough they were too big. At this point I figured ive waited long enough to save up for the intake and since im getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan i'll just grind on it a little bit and make it work. I grabbed a hacksaw and file and shaved the sides of the center port so the exhaust studs will clear and went to bolt the intake to the exhaust and the fit just wont work. When i put the bolts in the back side of the exhaust and intake (the side i didnt modify) there is no way the clearance will work to the block. The intake is way off from the ports and its just not gonna happen. My next thoughts were to take it to my shop tomorrow and fab a plate to cap the top of the exhaust manifold off and just not bother with mating the two, but then I did some research and learned the carbs for a 235 and 216 have different stud spacing. I just rebuilt an old rochester I had on a shelf for a 235 so now i 2 carbs for a 235 that wont bolt to my intake. I am trying to get the intake finished and running before i take off, and i dont exactly have an endless flow of income (Sergeant pay doesnt go far in SoCal). Does anyone have any advice on making all my 235 trash mate to the 216 intake? I have a modest amount of fab skills and will attempt about anything, i am just not trying to screw things up anymore than they already are. Thanks for any help. Semper Fi
I have a sense that there are going to be some hard feelings here. Looks like you modified a part (your mistake) after the guy sold you the wrong part (his mistake) Lots of people have fixed those 216 intakes to work on 235's - I have a couple in my garage now. But it is gonna cost you to have it fixed. I'd say either sell it for a loss to someone who can fix it or eat the cost and pay to have it repaired. You are never going to come out on this financially. You are gonna take a bath - little or big, but you are gonna take one. The guy who sold it should have known better - but the old saying caveat emptor applies. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news
Well as your in CA and probably don't need to have heat to the intake, I'd say forget about the exhaust not bolting up to the intake. Just blank the heat box up? As to the carbs, you may be able to oval the holes in the carb base so they can be bolted to the manifold? Or as was just suggested make up or get something to adapt the carbs to the intake. I wouldn't give up on it that quick. Dom
Thats what i was thinking, I just wanted to see what other opinions were. Ive made things run with a lot less before, so im sure i can monkey f*ck something that will no doubt be ugly but manage to work by some miracle.
