Is it nec***ary to run the oil line up to the right side of the head on a 1955 235 chevy motor or is it alright to plug it? I can't tell if this is the only way the rocker arm shaft gets oil or if it is fed from somewhere else.

that oil line feeds the rockers, goes through the water jacket, up into the head.. very fun to put in.. need some compression fittings, and a bone saw, and a hot glue gun.

I should have said when I got the motor it had an external oil line ran from oil filter line on the lower left side of the motor up to the top of the right side of the head. Do I need to run this line?

Yes, it's an older version of what tricky steve was referring to, it's external on the older 235's, or at least it was on mine.

I think the line is there because the oil flow thru the internal p***age is plugged with gunk. This was the fix to get oil to the rockers on sludged up engines.
I also remember an oil line under the lifter cover that goes from the rear at the bottom to the center at the top that does the same thing.
