Just got done reading all the threads on 250 vs 335 in a 54 chev. I have a 40 chev pu that I plan on putting a 235 in place of the 216. I already have a t5 installed behind the 216 with a s10 blazer rear axle. I figured the 235 (I have 2) would be almost a bolt in and adapt to the trans. Would the 250 allow the stock clutch set up? Since the 235 will use the existing bell housing, it seems to be the best fit? I know the 250 is a more modern engine. Am I saving work but not be happy with the 235? Or will the 250 fit in with the t5 trans? Which bell housing goes with the 250? Do I have to find a 250 with a manual trans? or does the v8 one work?

    Thanks,

    Roy

  2. being a hot rodder and shit stirrer at the same time you should ask about 261 vs 292 same engine more cubes

250/292 you can use modern transmissions without an adapter even an automatic haha

I know the 261 is a better engine because of the oil filter being built in, but they are hard to find and I have 2 235's. I thought the 292's were longer than the 235's so that would cause some clearance issues and mounting issues just like the 250's, I guess. Is the 292 the same dimensions as the 250? Are they as easy to find as the 250's? I would assume 292's would be expensive to build? Good point though. May as well look at all options.

Thanks for the info on the transmissions.

The 292 is taller than the 250 and has different mount locations.

The 235 is going to be an easier swap, 261 would fit just like a 235. Other worthy options are the GMC 270 and 302. The GMC motors are a little longer than the 216/235.

There are two problems with going to the 250 or 292 as I see it. First you have to use a later bellhousing that isn't going to bolt to your stock bellhousing crossmember or work right with the stock clutch linkage. Both can be overcome, but they are issues you don't have if you stick with the earlier motors.

Second if the motor side mounts instead of front mounts, so you have to create side mounts to support it.

I'm thinking you are already running a 235 bellhousing to support the T-5. Is that correct?

The GMC sixes mount basically the same as the 216/235/261 but are a little longer. You drill some new holes for the front mount and move the radiator forward. The GMC motors are also pressure oil with a filter.

I'd stick with the earlier type motor if it were me. But then I'm getting ready to drop a 454 in one of mine so what do I know.

261s don't have a built in filter. they're basicallythe same as a 235, but more cubes. Other than changing the water pump or moving your radiator, a 235 will drop right in... and you already have 2 of them. Parts are plentiful and you can get them from your local parts store, sometimes even the same day.

if your t5 bolts to the 216, then it should bolt to the 235
