Gotta replace the locked up 216 in my '53 Chevy. Found a guy that has 292s and 235s. Would it be worth the 292? Any problems I'll run into with mounts? I haven't seen the motors yet, and he didn't give a price, just said he wanted to get rid of them. Don't know much about the 292s so thought I'd ask.

  2. 292 is longer. BobK did a nice install in his vert which required re-doing the core support. 235 is easier but the 292 is a more modern design.

The 292 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as Chev v8's, so it won't bolt in place of a 216. The motor mounts are staggered, you'll be fabbin' mounts and changing wiring, linkage, hoses, etc. It's also longer and taller, but makes a lot more torque in stock form, and with mods will pull like a healthy small block.

  4. There's no replacement for displacement !!!...Go Big !!!.....if it doesn't fit...make it fit !!!

  5. How true...I had a 1980 GMC w/ 292, automatic 2wd, and a stock 4:56 rear...that truck could pull down a house !!...smoke the tires all day long !!!:D

  6. Go with the 292. It's slightly taller than a 230/250, and as mentioned, you'll need to rework mounts and such. If I keep my Hudson, a 292/700R4 is going in it.

Well, I am going to tell you to go with the 235. In my car, its the favored 6.

Its heavier, makes a lot less horsepower, harder to find parts for, more expensive and way cool. those are the good points. I dont want to discourage you by telling you the bad points.

I've owned both. You can make either one work. Personally I'd go with which ever appears to be in the best shape. If you want the easier conversion of the 2, I'd go with the 235.

    Thanks guys.

Sounds like I'll go with the 235. I'm not looking to dive into a bunch of mods to make a 6 fit. Looking just to get her going ASAP. Want to put a v8 in there possibly this winter, just really don't have the funds right now

I am actually waiting to hear back from a guy that has a 216 that my brother personally heard run. Not crazy about it, but if I can get it for $150 or so, that could help fund my chop...

I think that I'd go with a 235 instead of another 216. Like 6inarow said, 235's are way cool.

I agree. But 235 will require me to drive an hour to get it and most likely will be more expensive, and probably has not ran in forever, so I'll have to tinker around with it to get it going smooth

216 was cranked the other day, guy will most likely deliver it and I'm thinking it's gonna be dirt cheap.

Ever think of going 261, bigger than 235 but will still fit up to transmission and mounts.

I love my 235 in my daily driven 62 bel air. I wind it up to about 80mph sometimes, its screamin tho with the stock glide behind it, 3450 rpm I believe. I dont wind It that high much. Just every once in a while ill hammer down for a little. knock on wood its been rock solid. Runs like a top. Leaks oil too :D
