Well, Tore the pan off and the bearings are gone.... crank is scoared really bad... Anyone know of a decent shop with a GOOD rebuild kit...? this motor had 400 miles on it... got the raw end of a deal and now im gonna do it myself... head seems good. Lower end needs to be replaced, cyl walls look good.
so to rebuild this, do you mean rebuild everything, or just bearings and diff crank? If so, you could probably get it back on the road for around $250 give or take. "Runner" 235s seem to sell for around $100, so if you just wanted a good crank, it should be less than $100 or around that. Rod and main bearings you could check ebay for a new set, but you would probably need the crank first to know if it is standard grind or has been milled, so your bearings work with it. Then you need an oil pan gasket and you could be good to go if you dont need to tear the upper end apart. I would put an ad in the cl***ifieds here for a good crank and a set of bearings. And definately check the ebay situation out, as 235s are common motors, and if you cant find what you want one day, check the next and it could be there.
If your head is good the machine work and rebuild kit will cost you at least $550. for kit, which includes; lifters, pistons, rings, bearings, cam, oil pump, gasket set, plus the machine work for regrind and rebore. If you don't pay now, you'll pay later. In my town, basic 6 cyl valve job and resurface averages another $120. I take the block and crankshaft to my favorite machinest, he does all the machining and sells me the overhaul kit at his cost. Do it right, relax for about 20 years.
I bought most of my 261 parts through Patrick's Antique Cars & Trucks in Casa Grand, AZ. He specializes in inline chevys and flathead fords. Great people to deal with. There are dozens of other places to get parts, Langdons, Egge Machine, etc. And of co**** Car Quest, Napa, Autozone...... Let me make one suggestion, if it failed with 400 miles on it, take the time and do it right this time. And I know I probably don't need to say it but, don't just fix the bad parts, find out why they went bad.
