    Yes you read that right

    I have the opportunity to buy a 235 from a 57 belair or a 235 from a 1960 belair . Both are power glide cars .

Both are priced about the same and would be going into a 1950 Chevy

Is one preferable over the other ?

I don't think there is a lick of difference. Get the cleanest one inside.

For one thing 1960 has hydraulic lifters, while '57 are mechanical. Thus the newer runs smoother and needs less maintenance.

I'm certain the '57 Belair also has hydraulic lifters. The solids were in the truck engines.

  5. Pick the cleaner of the two, can you pull valve covers to see ?
    Both are hydraulic lifter engines.

  7. The '848' will bump up the C.R. a bit. My 235, seen in my avatar, has the 848, as well.

The 60 will have more power since it had to propel a heavier car.

Looked it up for the hell of it. The 57 lists at 140HP and 8:1 compression, the 1960 at 135HP and 8.23:1. I wouldn't let that sway me. I would go more by mileage, condition, completeness and price.

1953 powerglide cars and '54 on up were hydraulic lifters

  12. 1954 STICK 235 and 1955 STICK 235 still had solid lifters, in p***enger cars.
The switch to ALL hydraulic lifters in the 235, came in 1956, for p***enger cars.

I tried to look up the casting number on the 60 and didn't find it on the listings - 3836848
