I have a 49 shoe box with a stuck needs rebuilt 239 flathead. I have a chance to buy a newly rebuilt 239 out a F 100 and was told that it is the more sought after engine although my research on the INTERNET states their is no difference in the truck engine vs the car engine. The guy that has the engine said the water pumps and heads are different. I trust what he has to say he has been building street rods since the 60s and has a very reputable shop here in town. Does any one know of any differences in these two engines? thanks in advance

Mounts are different, and so is the oil pan. rest of the engine is the same, although some trucks did have higher CR heads. The best cam Ford made for the flatheads was a truck cam, too.

I put a 52 truck motor in a 51 car years ago and used the car water pumps and oil pan,I think you will also need to use the car flywheel too as I think the pressure plate bolt pattern was different.

If you can find one look for the flat head truck 336's. Man they were a real powerhouse. We had those in '49-51 F-8 fire engines. Good dependable power and surprising power too. I saw several later built to race. They did make a good accounting too in Southern California. Those were tough blocks too!

I don't think this is a good idea at all. I had some friends who tried to do it years ago and partially succeded. The engines are so heavy that they will put the front suspension right on the bump stops. Plus, they only made about 150 HP and there is virtually no speed equipment for them. For the cost involved, there are many, better choices.

The Ford big truck flathead is just the Lincoln V8 in a different home. Yes, it's big, yes, it's heavy, no, it's not a good swap into a Ford. Buy a baby Lincoln instead.

For Ford flathead info I recommend the Fordbarn site (www.fordbarn.com). There are folks over there with years of knowledge and experience on flatheads. The format is similar to the HAMB.
