Does anyone have one they could scan in or a link? We have a 56 ford pickup with the 239 y-block and are not getting oil up to the vavle train on the right bank. I pulled the valve train out and tried to put a wire down the hole but it sounds like it is hitting the block. I also tried a thin screw driver but no luck. Any help would be great!
Just FYI, a '56 would not have a 239, so if it is that, it's been swapped. Should be a 272 or 292. The oil p***age makes a right turn at the head deck surface & goes through a short groove in the head...., then turns 90 deg. again at the block & goes down, so the wire won't help. Like l__ .........................................................................................................................l There are several typical reasons why you might not be getting oil. Some of these will depend on whether you have a previously running engine, or a new rebuild. 1) The p***age is clogged from sludge; old engine with non-detergent oil, or infrequent oil changes. (See below) 2) The center cam bearing has spun, or you have used an early cam/late bearing or late cam/early bearing. 3) The rocker shafts/stands were installed incorrectly. 4) New cams have a very shallow groove which limits oil to the rockers. 5) The heads were milled so much that the oil "groove" is now too shallow. If the oil p***age is clogged...you can make a small plate that will bolt over the oil p***age on the head & install a grease zerk into it corresponding to the p***age. Try pumping grease into it to clear the p***age. Sometimes it will work. You can also remove the heads & clean things out. Aftermarket companies used to make oiling kits to byp*** the internal p***ages....basically just running copper tubes up to the rocker shafts. I think it's a crutch rather than a true mechanical repair, but it is a possibility, I suppose.
My good friend John had the same problem. After pulling the pan a second time, after his first attempt to clear the line failed, he removed the pickup tube completely and put a wire through it and then blew air throug it. Tons of nasty **** blew out of it, and his 0 psi oil problems were solved. It's worth a shot.
Another thread discusses a similar issue with Yblock oiling, lots of good info: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=334513
