As good a theory as any. Oil runs to the back & drips into rear cyl, why not? Could rear drain be slightly clogged? Causing oil to pool?

Hello George..I will check the drain hole. The engine is still fairly fresh. What would cause the drain to clog????? Tomorrow I will remove the valve cover can take a look..I will pull the rear plug first and see if it's dark..
    Thanks
    Duane..

Grey or black smoke would usually indicate fuel. Maybe there's a leak in the carb, and at an uphill incline fuel is leaking from the bowl into one of the carb throats. What type if intake manifold is on it?

    I'm sure it's not a fuel issue..

That's why I asked about the intake manifold. Some of them are built where there is not a plenum that feeds both sides of the engine, so that a rich or lean mix in one carb or carb throat only affects one side of the engine. For instance, a log manifold.

Hello..Yes,I took the spark plug ring off all the plugs, I learned that the hard way..The tub is the washer..Does anyone know where I can get new tubs or how to fresh up the ones I have..
Thanks for all the direction. I pull the valve covers off last night and will remove the plugs today.
I get a late start in the AM because I go to 24 Hour Fitness and get my workout..
Will let you know what I find..

I had a set of tubes that were getting a little beaten up where the plug sandwiched it to the head. I bought some steel bearing shims with the same OD as the round flat on the inside bottom of the tube, which is a little larger than the base of the spark plug. I had to open the inside of the spacer up just a bit to get the spark plug to thread through it. Now the tubes are held in nice and tight. Basically it's a larger washer, and it's thin enough that it doesn't much affect the distance the plug hangs into the combustion chamber.

Any progress on the gray smoke?
