I don't know much about these motors and a guy was telling me the motors are set up for wither an auto or manual trans and made it sound like they were not interchangeable. Can anybody clear this up for me? It seems like the motor should take either trans. Thanks

the standard transmission crankshaft was drilled for a pilot bushing , the automatic crankshaft was not drilled for a pilot bushing ,

  3. I think these may all have been drilled for a standard tranny, but the ones for the Dynaflow would not have a pilot bush in them. It's been a lot of years since I last messed with a straight 8 Buick, but I think that was the case.

Can you drill them or is that a major pain? Thanks for the quick responses btw.

I think there is more to it than just being drilled for a pilot bushing. I have a Bendtsen's transmission adapter for GM automatics and the info required for ordering includes whether standardard or dynaflow crank..........the flange is different as I understand it. I originally ordered an adapter for my '53 263 cu in engine, which had been hooked to a dynaflow, later decided to use the adapter on a 248 w/stick and required a different crank flange adapter for the flex plate.

The block bolt pattern and other dimensions are the same for stick or auto, it is specifically the crank flange that differs. That is not to say it can't be accomplished, but probably not without some alterations, and I don't know exactly what that would entail. Of course, here I am referring to stock Buick stick shift parts. If you wanted to adapt a late GM stick setup to a dynaflow crank, Bendtsen's (and other adapter co's) could supply the necessary parts.
