:D The way the cost is escalating in trying to get this finished I probably can't afford them anyway :D

Hey, good idea, I like peanuts, and beer too ;) :D

  6. What laser did you use?
I was expecting to see the beam on the floor too. Maybe the beam on the floor didn't show up in the pics?

I used a Stanley cross 90 laser, not an expensive unit, but comes with a nice mounting clamp.
I mounted a piece of 2x4 to the ceiling to hang it from.
Odd the way the pictures are, the line was all along the floor too. It's a mystery :D
    But it worked out well.

Took them out and bolted them on.
Really first class and a perfect fit.
Thanks to Matt for making them bang on, custom built to a drawing I sent him.

Next will be the connection to the undercar exhaust and getting caps made for the ends.

IMG_0735.JPG I started in on the exhaust, hooking up the Gear Drive headers to my undercar exhaust system.
Have to finish the drivers side then I can get the end caps done.
Then it will be time for ceramic coating of the entire exhaust system.
Those headers are sure nice

The headers are great but what impresses me more is that you have the confidence and skill to cut and weld on them. I hope I get to see this car someday. There are so many details I want to study.

Another step back  The headers and exhaust won't yet get to be coated. I tried to true the 2 bolt stub flanges so that when a gasket is placed between them they will seal.
Without a milling machine....good luck. I tried a belt sander followed by a flat machinists file and no dice
So.. I am now searching for an alternative that will have a positive seal, no way do I want flanges leaking exhaust onto the painted cowl :(
I thought about using a V Band clamp like I am using under the car however they are less than attractive and definitely not old style when exposed for all the world to see on header drop stubs.

On a more positive note I spent some time with the Wolfes Metal fab shrinking disc and the results are nothing short of amazing.
    http://www.wolfesmetalfabrication.com/sdisc4inch.html
I had a cowl patch weld seam that was oil canned and needed flattening out.
A little hammer and dolly to raise the low spots and then some shrinking brought it right into line and its ready for a skim coat of filler.
    A very effective tool.

As you said, they would seal, but will you be satisfied with the look of them???

Probably not. I'm wondering how a short internal stub of tubing that is welded to the header flange and slipped into the exhaust pipe would work?
Then there wouldn't be direct exhaust pressure on the flange joint or gasket

  22. Set backs are just the price we pay for being creative, the headers look great as does the work you have already done. HRP

Will it seal if you use some dead soft copper or aluminum gasket material? I think you can buy both from someone like Summit or Jegs.

Do those types of gaskets cope with uneven flange fit?
I'm thinking I'd need to have them to be 1/8" thick or something like that.
I'm still considering the internal stub idea too.

Here's a thread on the topic. I think you could leave the set-up as is. I would try a dead soft aluminum or copper and Ultra copper high temp sealant. You might be able to find a two-bolt gasket from Percys or SCE or Mr Gasket, but making some would be easy too.

I think you could use .040 or .080 material

I've used aluminum gaskets and ultra copper sealant with really good success.

Thanks, I'm going to invest in a new flat smooth file and see if I can't get them faced off nicer and then if I can I believe the gasket and sealer plan will work.
If I don't think that will work I might go to a 2.5" - 3 bolt flange, there might be a better chance of making it work with the third bolt ?
I'd like to stick with the 2 bolt setup. I'm not done yet. Just want to be sure I'll have something workable before I have things ceramic coated.

  28. Blue- I've enjoyed your posts on other threads--- but this is the first time I found your build thread. Beautiful. You are doing awesome work here and I'm now even more embarrassed by my cobbling skills. Great car and I can tell that you enjoy/love it. Thanks for sharing.

  29. The internal tube would do the trick.
Welding the flange inside would cup it the other way, and leave a little on the edges to true up for a seal.

Your belt sander might be a toy? :D

Did you know that milling machines are true because of the work done by hand?
They don't machine the machine true, they do it by hand. Get a 40 grit flap wheel and true up the flanges. :p

Well here we go, going to stay with the 2 bolt flanges .

This weekend I'll face the flanges, I found some nice flat 5" discs (not depressed center) for my grinder and will just spin face the flanges with light pressure.
I also went to the local Canadian tire store and found some exhaust tubing stubs in their adapter bins that fit nicely into the 2 1/2" exhaust tubing.
So I'm going to make some stubs that will be welded into the header flanges and stub down into the exhaust pipes.

The last step will be to mail a paper gasket from my flanges to Remflex and have some flange gaskets custom cut from their graphite material.

Also ordering a set of header gaskets at the same time.
    http://catalog.remflex.com/category_s/76.htm?searching=Y&sort=7&cat=76&show=10&page=2
    3020-2T.jpg
I also found some really nice ARP stainless 3/8" bolts with the small head and built in flange to hold the header end caps in place.
