261 starter on a 216??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kan't spell, Oct 23, 2011.

  1. Does anyone know if the starter from a 261 straight 6 engine would fit on a '51 chevy 216?
    Thanks

it will fit but wont work. the starters have different drive gears to fit the flywheels. The teeth are different to fit the different flywheels. 216 has 139 teeth, 261 has 162 teeth on the flywheel

  3. okay. Thanks. Can you change the drive gear on the 261 starter to the one off the 216 starter? Or is it not worth the effort.

It's a 6v or 12v thing, they changed in 1955 to 12v. The starter is completely different, you can't put any of the 12v starter parts in the 6v starter, or vise versa. Sorry.

But if you put the 261 flywheel in the car, you can use the starter too.

  5. Thanks. It doesn't sound like it would be worth doing.

    from Yakima WA.

Unless the 261 starter that you have is a 6 volt starter. They made a 261 in 1954.
