Hey ! I am wondering if anyone can tell me for sure what kind of material the grille shell on a 27 chevy is made of. I have one I was going to try to repair and noticed is is flaking off from the backside and it looks to be maybe lead? Doesn't seem like it would be aluminum and it sure ain't stainless. Any ideas?

  2. I'm pretty sure it is aluminum. My '29 is steel but the earlier Chevys were not.

cars = aluminum, trucks = steel I'm slowly trying to reproduce a 26 car, 27 is easier than a 26. they are so thin, I'm doing .050 should allow for a few years of polishing. How much of the shell do you need? tt

I can't remember but I was thinking nickle plated or aluminum on cars and trucks were steel. The cars are very hard to find. I think most restorers end up with truck grills and have them chromed.

  5. kisam and oldgoalie are correct:

    cars- aluminum
    trucks- steel

I have one of each and for some reason I like the steel better (it's for a speedster, so you'd figure I'd want something lighter, but the steel just looks better to me).

I agree with Mac the Yankee

The aluminum trim on mid to late 1920s chevs always looked cheap to me. They used it for headlight, taillight and cowl light rims, horn buttons etc - everywhere you would expect to find Nickel plated steel or brass - I'm using a commercial steel surround for my gowjob and replacing all ali parts with steel or brass. You could probably zinc plate and polish a steel surround to get the ali look.

Wow! Thanks for the information. I was thinking it looked Aluminum but didn't think manufacturers used very much then . The bottom section, lets say the bottom horizonal section is pretty rotted away. It's got a pretty cobby looking repair weld on it but is missing most of the lower area. Anyone have some pieces to sell me so I can try my luck? I really want to stay with the original look if I can, just because these are so rare anymore...
