due to lack of funds and scarcity of parts we are going with the f-100 front axle. <!-- / message --><!-- edit note -->
here is a question. what other axles are usable? from ANY car or truck.<!-- / message --> <!-- controls -->
'53 Chevy truck front and rear will work- they bolt right in and the front will give you a bit of a drop (I'll measure it for you when I get home tonight).
yep we replaced the rear of the cab. it was just too dented up to ever make look nice. just because it's a low low budget build doesnt mean i want a turd with tires on it.
i dont know dookie about this stuff but it seems like that 1982 302 engine should be plenty for this dinky lil truck.
Looks like the '53 Chevy truck front axle will give you about a 3" drop and will also give you hydraulic brakes while still keeping the 6 lug wheels (if you're going to use them).
Gettin' rid of the wood,. Wish I had done that. Prob easier and a stronger job. Good luck and keep us posted. Jim
picked up an axle in very good shape with steering box etc. $125 today. got the back with window done also.
Looks good you are really getting after it. I like working with old chevys the steel part not the wood...John
yeah i did the same thing with my willys cj5 build. i just get on it after work every day and all days off until i run out of money then wait for the next payday so i can buy more parts.
There is a cool book about building a T Bucket cheap, written twenty years ago, by a H.A.M.B. member. You can download the book for ten bucks, it's worth it. I found lots of neat tricks, esp. building your own shifter. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=419568 http://www.tbucketplans.com/ The book shows how you could use your existing axle and one of the springs, just trim off the spring pads, fab up some "batwings" to mount the spring perches and shackles(both of which you can make yourself out of steel plate). You could fab the radius rods yourself, or bite the bullet and buy some of these for $89. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/32-R...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5881f32c92 I think you are doing such a nice job, it deserves a nice tidy front suspension, that parallel leaf setup may look too bulky.
oh boy decisions decisions... it gets a lil overwhelming for a guy that doesnt know crap about these things. i appreciate the input!
Down load the book, and if you have questions, Chester, as well as thousands of others, are right here to help you out. Now I'm off to to the garage to work on my own '27.
Hey Billy, mind telling how wide your cab side panels are? From the door jamb to the rear corner of the cab?
i keep forgetting to measure those for you. i have to drive to the shop and by then i forget everything....
