Got the garage cleaned out and this thing mocked back up. Lots to do still. The front is too low. Let me know what you guys think. Norton
Awsome start. I like the look of your modified, wish mine were that far along. Keep us posted on your progres***ore pictures. .......Jack
Looks like you need a flatter front cross member. And maybe trim the outside corners of the frame to clear the bottom of the spring. Or shorten the rad shell.
I would love to roll it out. Note the new leaf springs in pics 4. I need to put the rear end back in my falcon before the driveway will be free. Unkl Ian, if I owned a welder I would rebuild that front cross member for sure. I'm just planning on putting an angle on the front frame rails for now. The rad shell will be getting shortened as well. Norton
and a question. How much clearance should I have between my rear tire and the rear radius rod? Norton
I'm diggin it mang!!! Nice work!!! Agree on the slightly flatter front crossmember. Keep us posted please.
Thanks for the replies. There is a little bit of frame rail peaking out under the body in the back that would be a great place to mount some friction shocks over to the radius rod. Still have some steering issues to work out. Could I have an arch put in that steering link for clearance? Still need to plate the inside of the rear radius rods for strength. Can anyone id this steering box?
I think your front crossmember is part of your problem. Maybe you should make a bracket to move the spring out in front of the crossmember, and then your tie rod problem would go away. Also if you could lower the mounting point a bit you would gain more height. Of course the bracket for the bones would need relocating too, if you went this route. As for bending the steering arms, I'd be leary of screwing up the ackerman, if nothing else. But all in all it's a slick looking rig. Hope you get it done and can enjoy it.
Looks like the main leaf is a little long, based on the angle of the shackles. I would suggest you swap the shackles around,so the nuts are on back, that will give a little more clearance. Possible solutions: --- Cut the brackets off, move them back and up,to gain steering clearance, and ground clearance on the rad shell. --- cut the bones in front of the shackle mounts, and add material to stretch the bones. --- cut the tube off the shackle bracket, and offset it to the rear.Gusset as necessary. --- Heat and bend the steering arms,to make them shorter, front to back. Absolute LAST CHOICE,run the tie rod on front.
Thanks guys! The shackles will be turned around next time up there to work on it. We put them in that way before we knew we had a clearance problem. I'm thinking of just moving the mounts on the rods back and up to gain steering and ground clearance. Changing the frame is a way bigger h***le than just taking the bones off and reworking them and moving the mount on the frame. Seems like it might be the easiest way to go. The car is at a 106" wheelbase right now, another inch isn't much of a big deal. The rad shell is going to get shortened so it's bottom is level withe the bottom of the frame. Norton
Put the rear end back in my Falcon so we can roll it ahead in the driveway now. Moved the '27 outside for some more pics. Thanks for checking it out. Norton
Nice fab work!! Really like your front spring mount and the mounting on the wishbone. Very nice. Don't worry about bending the steering arms, heat them up and bend to get the cross link to clear everything. DO NOT put the cross link in the front!!! Looks terrible and is just WRONG! If you need to raise the front a little go to a spring with out the reversed spring eyes, should give you around 1-1/2 inches lift. You can't be to low, my 29 modified is only about 3 inches off the ground at the frame rails, I added some 1/8 inch alum plates so they drag on the ground instead of the fram rails, then I just watch where I drive. Again, "You can't be to low"!!! Love your car, can't wait to see it done!! Rex
To be honest, i think the cars visual profile is borderline "rat rod". from some angles it looks too long and too wide, could maybe be a couple inches higher, but thats just my opinion. keep of the good work
Thanks for the kind works and help guys. Rex, thats a great idea about putting in a front spring without reversed eyes. Bending the steering arms sounds like a good plan. I only need a little bit more clearance. The backspacing on the front wheels is off a little and makes the front of the car look really wide. One of those things that you would go back and change if you could. The body might be getting moved up about an inch or so for more room inside, we'll see. I'm 6'1 and and over 200lbs. The more room the better in that body, haha. I agree it's a little too low, but almost a ratrod. Yeah right.... Norton
I disagree, it doesn't look like a ****ing rat rod. Get over it. It looks like modified should. A tad low for me but cool.
Lookin' good Norton! Nice to see the new bride hasn't curtailed your garage time (yet...) If you're still thinking of raising the crossmember you'll be limited by your frame rail width if you go with the same mount configuration. A stock eyed spring should give you an inch of lift, we'll have to scare one up ('40-'48??) Give me a shout when you're ready to do the Falcon engine/trans and I'll see if I can get out there to help. Flatman
Lookin good. I'm all about low cars... Hell, the trans and grill shell on my roadster are barely 2 1/2" off the ground... But you may wanna think about bringin those rod ends a little farther off the road. It would **** to have em catch on something. Please keep us posted on your build, I'm totally diggin it!!!
Flatman, she's been pretty good about it and supportive too! She still says she'll come up and help work on it, haha. I have another spring in the garage I can put on the front. The falcon should be ready to go back together in a couple of weeks, I'll let you know for sure. Thanks for all your help and encouraging words. I have to agree with everyone saying it's too low. I'm trying to fix that without major reconstruction of the frame. Things are looking good so far. New/different springs front and rear should get the frame up an inch or more. The tape was a visual aid for me to see how messed up the back of the body is, haha. It needs a little tweaking. This thing looks tiny next to that truck! Norton
Ok, now I get it 27kid! LOL, in regards to Myspace comment. This thing is very cool. Now I will have to come over and see it. Keep up the good work.
