I realy like your spring hangers you welded to the bones! Makes mine look unsafe (suicidal?) Glad to see I'm not the only one that has trouble getting the wishbone pins out of the axle. Guess I need a hotter torch.
very nice...and don't worry the little problems they make the day you drive it that much sweeter.........
I like it. I'm a little concerned about bump steer if your going to have the pitman arm hanging out of the hole in the body; it looks from the photos that the drag link and the bones are going to be at conflicting motions. Need to see a side shot to be sure so may not be an issue. Like I said; looks good to me. We have something in common. PanheadGuy Check out my lamps: www.shadyladylighting.com
Looks good, And it would not be a hot rod if you got it right the first time!! Hope to see you on the road soon. cm30.
Thanks for the replies! JEPPA, Next time you're down near Cambridge stop in. I'll pm you mu number. panheadguy, Great business you have there! The steering set up is still up in the air at the moment. Getting a good side shot of it at all has been a pain. Guess I'll have to roll it out into the street this week and get some better shots. Still need to change the front cross member. I would like to put in more of a model A type. Any one selling a mig around here? Norton
I checked out your thread earlier. Your T looks a bit like my 28. I like where it's going. My thoughts though: I think you have a few issues around clearance and such that you would normally pick up and adjust during mock up. Not having a welder, I suspect you have just gone straight into the build, getting things welded up by friends as they have time. That makes it very hard to change things as you go. I think you have ended up chasing your tail on some of this stuff when you could have addressed it early on, made it right and moved on. I think you do need to get yourself a welder and ***ociated tools and don't be afraid to cut your losses, chop into it and move stuff now you can see the problems. Re doing a few parts will get you there quicker (and you'll be happier) than chasing your tail trying to make everything else work around something that has been inherently wrong from the start i.e. your front crossmember. Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a shot at you, just giving some advice that you probably already know but can't deal with until you have the right gear. Keep the updates coming Pete
striper, You are pretty much right with everything you've said! I totally understand what you're saying. The sad part is that I paid someone to build my frame for this thing. It was fully mocked up and he had it on a frame jig and did a ****ty job. Now I'm trying to fix it after wasting all that $$$. I really want to slice into it and redo that crossmember! lBB41, it's a 26/27 steel Ford body. With a ton of plastic all over it, haha. Thanks guys! Norton
Looks great. Just about exactly the way I would want to do that same year car, except I would put a 40" Model A bed on it. Love it! Keep the updates coming.
I like it alot. Great Ideas for the back and front cross member. I think its gonna be tricky to run a gas tank in that thing! Great job on the frame, makes me want to go in the garage and start working on mine. How wide is that front end in coohoots with the rear? Seems like a WIDE front ibeam.
I've been tossing the idea of a pick up bed around for awhile. I have about 2.5" of pan clearance as it sits, haha! Not quite enough. I'll raise the front and the back a little to keep the stance as close to this as possible. The front end is pretty wide and I should have ordered wheels with a different offset. Thanks for the encouragement! Norton
Well, I know now! I've been thinking about a turtle deck as well. Mckee told me he has one. I'm just going to put the gas tank back there for now... Any other idea about what I could do with my front end set up? Norton
Re: front end..try the stock eyes..you might get a bit more by re- arching the spring a bit. Really sits nice..good luck.
It isn't unusual to bend the tie rod for clearance. I did on mine and I'm pretty sure I got the idea from looking on other cars and on the HAMB. To get about an inch of clearance you bend it down about at maybe a 20 degree angle and then back horizontal, I did mine with a torch and vise, by hand, checking it against a pattern I drew on the welding table. I used a tie rod from speedway, ordered it about an 1" or 2" longer than the straight measurement. Make a template from some round rod or something to double check.
The plan is to bend the steering arms down to gain extra clearance. A spring with stock eyes and more arch is a good idea. I just hate that front cross member now. It's just plain ugly and could be better. The low front end is starting to grow on me. I just want a few more inches of clearance. Norton
haha, not yet! I'll post new pics as soon as we start cutting stuff apart. Seems this xmas thing is getting in the way. Norton
Small update. I bought a welder a few weeks ago. Merry Xmas to me! haha. Getting parts cleaned up. Need to replace about 10" of driver side sub-rail. We have the front of the frame braced and ready to cut out the old crossmember. Got my header flanges ready to mount. More soon! Norton
Thanks fellas! I've been trying to keep it "compact". The front end being out as far as it is kinda bugs me, haha. The Cooper and Hayes post just reaffirmed to me that my car is a little too low for where I want it to go era and style wise. So, with changing the front crossmember to a model A style one, I'll raise the front of the car a couple of inches and gain the oil pan clearance I need for real driving. Norton
