Well, thought long and hard before buying it because of issues it had, but bit the bullet and now it's mine. I know Howell's has patch panels for Ts, but I'm thinking I will probably be better off with a whole new turtle deck for this thing...and those are becoming very hard to find in decent condition. Soooooo... anyone know who has these? Anyone have a lead on someone with a hoard of T parts that has 27 panels? Here are some pics - what would you do?
I don't think anyone makes them... but there are a couple hamber metal guys that have successfully made new ones! Might do a search.
i would fix that if it were mine.... thats damn near a "rust free" car in wisconsin if you decide to get rid of them PM me with a price
Find better ones if you can, otherwise look at repairing what you've got (I'm guessing some goof left the deck laying upside down). I repaired mine even though they were missing the lower 4 to 5 inches all around (once I removed the perforated metal and filler "repair" work!), but found some better ones as I was working on the first set. Just hang onto that T-section channelling.
whats your metal working skills like? and what equipment do you have? Those panels are quite repairable if you have the skill and time. I have a wooden buck here tho...so i could make you some
there's an article in the newest Street Rodder about scratch building a 27 T body from scratch. you could just read that and BANG... new quarters... seriously though... part of why i abandoned my various 27 roadster project was lack of panels. and i'm in california. best of luck. make it happen.
It looks like part of the trunk support structure (or floor) is gone too. The roadster PU used this body as well, without the turtle deck.
That one doesn't look too bad. I bought mine off a guy taking it to the scrap yard because nobody would buy it.. I got a cheap wheel and just figured I could learn something new. I really can't hurt it there are at least 5 inches missing across the bottom. A good body is a lot harder to find!
take your time and repair the body 27 is the best roadster rod. good chances for the suite. there is nothing impossible it must be time. I from zero for the manufacture of a 27's and I'm not the art
Thanks for all the replys, guy. Im thinking this is going to become a - um - learning experience for me. A big one, I am sure, but I like that. My fabrication skills are pretty basic, however I'm very interested in learning and I'm thinking seriously about doing what I can with these...as you have a buck set up, if I screw them up I may be contacting you about fabricating a pair! Yeah, I saw that article, ironically that issue came out just the week before this roadster sort of fell in to my lap. I'd really like to fix these panels, especially as reading that article on making new panels from scratch seem quite intimidating. As I just moved back to the rainy Northwest after living in SoCal for the last 20 years, this brought me back to reality as to how difficult it is to find decent rust-free sheetmetal any more. But that is just the way it is now, and I like a challenge. So, you had pretty good luck? I'd love to see some pictures of your car, especially your deck as you were working on it, if you have any and wouldnt mind sharing them.
Peddro, I think you're right. Also, I found a post from you to a guy who was asking similar questions, and thought I'd put the links you provided here as well for those who are interested: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=250573&highlight=roadster&showall=1 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=240794&highlight=malcolm+austin If anyone has any other threads to recommend that they know to be helpful, I'd love to know about them as well - thanks!
