okay, looks like last post was 2014. nice.. Not going to make excuses,although.. never mind. I actually have done some work on this project over the last couple of years..not enough though. I am going to try and get this thread up to date, weekly updates as well. This is the continuation of the spring hanger fab project, in this picture it looks as though the slide in/narrowing axle work is done,I need to look for pics on that as well. I am still a dope at posting here, so bear with me until I get sorted.
some torque tube shortening stuff, I will figure this image stuff.. probably once I'm done with this car.
This stuff is sort of out of order, some stuff is missing as well. Anyhow, inboard wishbone mounts were fabbed by cardboard and bandsaw then wrapped with 10 gage or so steel. Wishbones were shortened and attached to the original lug on a 40 torque tube. center crossmember was altered a touch and capped top and bottom,a drive shaft was made from 2" dom and some ends I machined with ford shaftends pressed and welded in, pretty happy with .005 runout between centers on that. digging for pics.
seems simple, but i still cant get it right. These are some little x member pieces I made from 10 or 11 gage on a buddies heavy ass brake, I then bored some holes in them with a fly cutter on my mill with a hand ground hss tool bit. That was kinda sketchy but fun, no dimple dies in these.
here is some images of all my engine mount pieces, I made this stuff from the random bits we all cant throw away.
Here is a couple images of the engine that is going in the car, it's a 1940 ford engine, originally a 3.062 bore, I got it in well worn condition, sleeves had been removed and it had been bored/honed to 3.187 , had a full 8ba 3.75 stroke rotating assembly in, isky cam and johnson lifters. I got it with a 36 top shift box attached, although it had a double detent shift tower and late gears inside. All of this stuff had been run for years together..no story unfortunately.Anyhow, stuck valves, worn bearings etc.. These are shots from tearing down. At present the block has been cleaned, magged, one small crack under the valve seat repaired, ruff bored .015 over 3.187 to be finish honed at .020 over. (sonic check says thats it for boring, gotta save em all though, right?) I've had delta grind a l100 cam and resurface the johnsons and a virgin merc crank is going in with offy heads, thickstun pm7, rebuilt crab distrib. and two 97s.I have rebuilt 2 of those 36 boxes with late gears and dual detent shifter tops (extra one just in case). I will post a pic of the trans box ready for rebuild next although 2 are done. That is it for now, I promise to stay on it and get some pics. Thanks to anyone still watching this thread..
Great build. I was torn between a '27 on '32 rails, or a '34 roadster, and opted for the '34, so I'll live vicariously through your car. Carry on.
Great thread! That was my dream vintage hotrod, but I got a bad case of stupid, and sold off my nice 27 roadster body. Still suffering from that mistake, so I'll follow your build with envy and jealousy.
Hi, this is my weekly update. It's kind of boring and the lighting is a bit bright. However, it is an update and that's more than I can say for the last year or so. I took the turtle deck pieces apart, cut a bunch of the seat riser and associated bits out and had it all sandblasted. Like most of these the bottom 3 or 4 inches was bad, so that has been cut out and I have been replacing the metal in those areas. The bun panels I bought years ago and the cowl patches I made myself. I made the switch from the one piece sill/rocker panels to the two piece version. I am not sure which year is which (26 or 27) but I had another roadster front half lying around that had much nicer rockers and it featured the two piece parts. To do this I simply had to weld up the old screw/rivet holes and drill/tap 12-24 for the new panels. They are shown with some brass screws from the hardware store in the photos. I filled the gas flap hole in the cowl as well. As of right now the passenger side lower patches ad rockers are done, the cowl is filled and the drivers side cowl is fix, rockers ready to go on. Last night I started fixing the drivers quarter, it was hit hard at some point. The jamb support was broken at one of the lower bolt holes and it was bent in a bit. I have cut away the damage to unlock the stress holding it in the tweaker position. The jamb support is now fixed and back where it needs to be. Starting tomorrow eve. I will begin repairing the sheet metal. Here are some pics.. See ya next week!!
