clean up flange on the lathe with fixture, drill snout flange on rotary table, clean up some dom tubing, press in. Turn snout nose for press in and bushing housing. Bore out flathead pilot bushing for 1.125 torsion bar which will become extended sector shaft.
So that's all I have for now. I promise that I am motivated now. This has been going on/off for too long. Hopefully see ya soon with more. Thanks for lookin! Your pal Matt
here's a little update, box is pretty much finished, I decided to make a longer snout that pokes through the cowl instead of just the sector shaft. Seems like a better look and keeps that support out there. Photos show the shorty, then the finished one. I also made the passenger side doo dad that will provide the mount point on that side. Photos show the sector extension job, press fit into the torsion bar, I still need to weld and pin it.
obviously I will need to shorten, shape and drill, ream the pitman/torsion arm. I also need to make the mount for both sides of the box. Today hopefully.
I was pretty keen to run the wire wheels on this car,but I really want to try out this rear end conversion I built with the slide in axles and the wire wheels wont fit over the rear f1 bendix drums. I had some solid 16 early ford wheels around, so thats what I will change to. I had a couple that were kinda hammered, so I drilled the rivets out, ordered a couple hoops from this place in kansas and made up some rear 6.0 wide early style wheels. I ordered a couple firestone 7.00 16 for the rear to match the fronts.
to do the wheel job, i borrowed a brake lathe from my buddy bob. I cut an early ford drum, nice and true,ID chucked it in my lathe, knocked it around for minimal runout, bolted the center on and trued it up for a press fit in the new hoop. The press fit was more than i liked, but i didn't want to trim too much off the center. This made it difficult to get running true as an assembly. Anyhow, got it done and dropped all 4 off to les schwab for the 32 dollar gloss black powder coat jobby.
I tried to upload a video of cutting the center, but I cant figure it out. Too much coffee to focus at the moment.
Whoa! Awesome! Where'd you buy the hoops??? I need some for my dirt car. Did you upload the vid to YouTube first? I don't believe you can host it here directly?
Hey Mike, I got em from hey machinery, or heywheel online. They are a farm machinery supply out in kansas, near you possibly? cant remember the town. 39 bucks a hoop, also they have tubes with the shorter valve stem, not the semi truck kind. No, never uploaded to you tube. maybe try that sometime. how do you get it from youtube to hamb?
Cool I will Google them. Thanks! Once you YouTube it grab the link and add it once you open that little filmstrip link I circled below.
Mad lathe skills!! Amazing what you can do with the knowledge and right tools!! Keep the updates coming!!
I have some updates. It's saturday night and I'm a bit buzzed, so I will put up a couple pics, then explain? cool? mmk
OK, these are the solid wheels I have switched to, 40 fords on front, 40 centers with 6" wide hoops welded in on the back. rubber is 4:50-16 in front and 7:00-16 out back firestone deluxe champion. Rear wheel build complete from previous posts. Finish is gloss black powder coat from les schwab (shitbags, fuck that place). FYI
all the steering box bits are made from model a rear wishbone chunks and the shaft collar pieces are old axle housing chunks and keystock welded on for the bolty bits.
with the cowl steering, pinched rails and fat rear wheels, I thought it was looking kinda race car. I decided to build hairpins instead of using wishbones. I wanted something unique, combined with being cheap, it meant I had to build them myself, which is great because if something is easy I feel a little cheated.
Here's a few shots, they are not done, obviously I have taken some design cues from bass and his wade coupe build... What's that quote about imitation? yeah. He is dreamy and builds cool shit. I hope these work well because I really think they are neato.
I will be using model a - 34 rod ends for the frame end, I have figured out a cut and fit jobby on an f1 spring shackle mount for the frame mount. I hope to gain some ground on these tomorrow.
