I agree. I'm glad this thread took a good turn and kept going. I'd love to build a rod with a Pinto or some other semi modern 4
anteek, Go for it. It's a reliable engine and it can look like anything your imagination can visualize. For every naysayer there will be ten folks that love it. Like this: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=256789&highlight=single+seat Good luck with your project.
that lil truck in rolls and pleats is a awesome truck! it inspired me alot on my lakes modified. thanks for bringing that up...
Do it!!!! The little Datsun engines are great and it will run forever and you can beat it like a rented mule!! Doing an A, or B motor today is expensive and I don't care how much money you put in it, it will not run as well or out last the Datsun. I have a Ford Zetec in my roadster and love it. Rex
when i was a kid and had no money we put any running engine in anything we had,Cadillac's in chevys,6 bangers were never considered cool in those day,but we had to get to work and back,we didn't have Jap engines back then, but if we had of we would have used them. My cousin is a hard core ford man,he put a chevy in his 55 ford pickup because he had a chevy engine laying around, and no fords. Hell,he has a 440 in the same pickup today,40 years later. If you have the Datsun engine, run it,i would..
I would have just done it. Dressed the engine nicely, no nissan / datsun name anywhere, nothing to make it look foreign. If done correctly people would have liked it and then when they found out what it was they wouldnt have cared. However, the point of something being free or really cheap should not be the deciding factor. What you really want to use should be the deciding factor.
i have a quad four in my 26 rpu, a set of side draft webers and a lake pipe looks pretty dam cool i think..... It should be a little over 200hp and should get over 30mpg. Nothing wrong with something a little diffrent. besides it yours do whatever the hell you want with it!
Hot Roddin' is to make use of what you have at hand without spending a bunch $$$. Go for it! Cruisin' is better than walking. So its not traditional, if you want to change it later when opportunity arises then do so. It is your set of wheels.
Actually, the Pinto engine was a European Ford engine that was imported to use in the Pintos, wasn't it?
Put a hood on it and figure it out as you go - getting rid of the value cover - run a tube from what ever cover you use or make to hide the PVC - Put A gen & crab, headers Put a sticker that reads ( OCCUPIED JAPAN )
Even though it has become to be known as the Pinto Motor, it indeed came from and was built in England!
A friend stopped by to show off this Super Seven he was working on, it had a supercharged Datsun in it. It went straight to the top of my 'so what' list. Build and drive as you see fit, there is room for everybody in our sport, but when you get to where you are going the only folks that sre going to be impressed are fellow datsun owners. A Pointaic iron duke has serious bragging rights, how abut one of those ford 4 cyls from a boat that is 1/2 of a 460?
