Hi guys. Im planning on an engine swap next winter, but for this year after Hamber opinion Im running the stocker. Its all stock 272 3spd with new plugs, points, condensor, cap rotor and wires. The old girl runs good but I have a "popping/backfire" in the exhaust on a quick deceleration. Can I tune this out- or is this a common issue?

It drives me nuts, and Im still running the stock crossover exhaust. I want to put a performance muffler on- but fear that will make it even worse.

    Any suggestions or ideas ?

What carb are you running? Certainly sounds carburetor related.

Stock carb. You know, I took the ****py oil bath breather off and the car ran 95% better. Still a little popping, but way better...

If the car runs better with the oil bath removed, it may have to much oil in it and its restricting air flow. A pop out the exhaust on throttle closing says its a bit lean. The oil bath thing would make it lean. Double check the oil level in the air filter and report back.

Thanks, it does have too much oil in it. Im gonna get a nice open element and put that POS up on the shelf. You guys are great ! It barely even pops now.
