After last outing at the drags pulling a 15.9 quarter mile, I knew the time had come for a rethink, not only to get that time I pushed like i never had before but I know as it is, it wont get much better! So went to a swap meet and stumbled accross some slightly scary but chromed ladder bars, got me thinking how nice some suspension might be? So i grabbed them. Any way after carting what felt like 300 kgs worth of ladder bars back to the car worked out that I was gonna need more power! So started hunting for a blower, ended up with a nos 6v71, I have a tri power manifold i may modify to fit it otherwise might just make one from scratch. I bought the mummert repro a/c & p/s accesory pulley so should have 3 v belts to turn it. The 6 94s will be lifted higher and will feed the pump with a dose of 85% ethanol (available at some fuel stations here). Hoping to finish off the signwriting before it next goes out to it's deadine event (Chopped rod and custom show in October).
I cut up the ladder bars as the ends looked like they would be fine on a banger powered A. And welded in some bungs to mount heims and adjustable stronger ends. Also made some brackets to mount to the body. Mocked one side up and seems there be some floor going.... The bars will be mounted slightly uphill as I accept the fact it's not going to be too fast so might as well try get the wheels in the air! ha ha! The last pic is just some trivial info... everytime i have polished the outers with staybrite wool as it becomes really black i wipe a little over the as cast centre and hey presto semi magnesium look. I like it!
Yes, and before i cop any **** I was only running the two centre carbs! hopefully the blower asks for at least four to feed it!
Ok so I been a bit too busy to post up here lately but the ladder bars are all in floor has been cut and shut. All the blower parts are on their way from the states. And I just ordered a pair of hurst pie crusts and let me tell you, Cody has been top notch for service and advice, only drama is my 15x8.5 American racing wheels won't work with the 7" wide tyres that are coming. So went to work searching my backyard..... Come up with a pair of 58 customline wheels for centers and a pair of 62 Buick 6.5" wide rims for the outers. They have the ***y smooth taper on the reverse side, can't put that to waste so reversed it'll be! Gotta trim the od of the centers to fit. Do that on the lathe tomorrow, and polish them ready for chrome. Anyway here's some pics. and no the cragars won't be on there too long! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Turned this into this Crank drive. Then made this look a little more useful like this Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Still have to machine the bolt up holes and the keyway. But this is how they look together. also had a start on polishing those wheels, might not even chrome them for now! only because my wallet is hurting from being out of my pocket so much lately! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
And here is a reference shot against the original snuck a extra belt behind so it'll be 4 belts now! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
did a little more today! Made one hole offset 5' so that the pulley can be marked for tdc and never mixed up. Also got this the other day off a mate of mine. This is probably more special to me than the manifold it will be bolted to. I absolutely love say why and stuff got a Pontiac dragstar and rocker covers for my Pontiac roadster build, to me there is nothing better! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Thanks for all the support! Here is the latest donation from my friend! Thanks Dave!!! Just hope it will make it at least one lap of the chopped dirt track! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Don't know whether that makes me lucky or cursed! Haha! Truth be told went to have a look at a 39 Pontiac and seen the rear window of this behind a couple other cars and organized to buy it without even looking further! Don't get me wrong, it was cheap enough for me even if I only ended with that roof and window! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Definitely needs more than 4 carbs! Looks good for a hot rod motor, but I'm trying to make it look like a purposeful race car?!? Nearly forgot I had these covers, nows as good a time as any to put them on! Just gotta find my finned valley cover now.... Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Got a little more done today, keyed the crank hub, finished the port plates and bolted them on (I stuffed up the fist set) and started marking out the blower top for the 6 carbs. Little far spaced but I like the menacing home made look this spacing has with the carbs on. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Found my valley cover, gave it a quick polish on high edges. Started to blast the crank pulley, but not sure I like it? So I polished half..... What do you guys reckon polished, blasted or as machined (as in pics earlier) Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I really like the polished side. It enhances your great machine work on the lathe better than the blasted. Awesome project keep us posted.
Ok so i just added a poll on blasted as machined or polished finish on the pulleys. Keep in mind i will be having just a blasted blower, manifold etc.... its all happening gotta have this done in just over 3 weeks!!!
So I polished it anyway... Looked good off the car, almost like an old chrome job. But put it on and i am going to blast it! Doesn't look right! Painted and re polished the valley cover, only to find it needed heaps of modifications just to make it fit not to mention get in there! Started to weld the base in the manifold but got stuck so started on the carb plate top. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Didn't really think it out, but it was probably a waste of time polishing that valley cover! It'll all be hidden. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Finished the blower top! Ready for blasting. I reckon it looks sweet, I am really happy with the way it has turned out. Sorry gave false info, almost finished it, still gotta put the mounting holes in and open the carb throats out. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Thanks also to anyone who puts a nice comment here! Does kinda keep the spirits high! Although lately the progress is enough to keep my blood pumping. 2 more weekends to go then hopefully i'll be contributing to keeping the folk of newstead awake for a few days. CHOPPED HERE I COME!
