After close inspection of the my gas tank in the cowl of my Tudor 28 29 Model A, I found 3" of **** in the bottom of the tank and some pin holes in the side. I am thinking of cutting out the bottom of the tank since I wont be using it, and to also make more room under the dash. Is the tank bolted to the cowl or should I just cut it out? The last one I did was clean so I've never removed a Model A tank before. What the best way yo do this?
not sure about the 28/29, but on the 30/31 there are bolted clips up underneath along the outer edge of the cowl inside. these clamp onto the seam of the tank and the horizontal struts underneath. also there are screws along the top front edge on 30/31, but i dont think those are on the 28/29
i think it would be worth it to take the tank out to cut the bottom off. it does bolt to the cowl, when i took the one off my car about a year ago i found if i tightened the bolts about half a turn they just brake in half. it was a lot easir that way then trying to loosen them. also be carefull when you cut it open, mine also had a bunch of **** in the bottom and it turned out some rats were living in there, i didn't know they were in there and it got a little mesy on the initial cut with the plasma
MP33 - I have a 27 nash rectangular tank I will mount from under the frame about mid way back. Fits under the body and in some braket I fab'd from the frame just perfect!
The top of the tank is the top of the cowl. It bolts across the rail at he base of the windshield, and a couple bolts down each side at the seam. If you take the dash rail off,it should be obvious. Henry allowed for things like this.
Might be a good idea to open the windshield as far as possible for some elbow space. If you take all the bolts of right down to the floor (inside door post) you can remove the whole lot in one go, firewall included. Then turn it upside down and grind of the bolts that are to hard to get at in the normal situation. Almost forgot you might want to remove the dash rail as well.
My 28 I took the tank off the car and a friend cut out the underside with a plasma cutter and now I have lots more room under the dash. How much you leave on is up to you. Maybe for dash guges or what ever . Look at some rods allready done There is no wrong way to do it. John
