Standing back and looking at this made me excited for the final push on this thing. The seats are the speedway buckets and I trimmed the back panel to get as much room as possible. The truck is more comfortable than my tub is and I can drive that thing all day long and not get too uncomfortable. I found a k20 yellow primered bed that is way nicer than my older one. Wish they still made that k20 primer, and if anyone has any I might be interested in buying a gallon off you if you do! Strange how quickly this thing got away from the green theme I had going once I found a nicer condition parts truck. lol Now it has black fenders.
Another question, Anyone have any close up pics of the stock model a pickup top? I bought all the model a stuff for it (rain gutters, wire on and hide em welting, and the long grain top material. I started with a section of cheap vinyl i stretched and stapled to the inboard sides of the perimeter of the top wood. Next is either chicken wire (or not?), cotton batting and then long grain stock vinyl. I'm trying to avoid the roof billowing going on the highway at 75+mph, would chicken wire help with this? Thanks in advance to anyone that knows. Gordy
Went to fordbarn and got some help with tons of images of how a ccpu roof is supposed to look. Hot day today so I was able to get the roof on. Still need to do the gutters, welting and visor but very happy with how it turned out. Think I might add butyl rubber on the caulk gun to make it really weather tight where my staples and nails are.
Got the dash wired up. I have an ugly electrical speedo. Have a bad feeling I may have wired the speedo wrong, but I'll go back and fix it if so. Exhaust was finished up, just needed the two short pipes after the mufflers. Started wiring some. Have the engine compartment done, and currently working on turn signals. Colin gave me this cool little plate holder/light/turn signal unit. Gonna have that centered and then pontiac taillights on the fenders. Second seat frame built and put in. Thinking i'm gonna do black rolls (and pleats?) with white piping on the seats. I got the bed put on. I'll pop out the dent at my friends body shop. haha
Pics of the pontiac taillights. They sit a little more inboard than I'd like, but I wanted to use the existing holes from the model a tail lights. Third brake light and turn signal will help, and am looking for some black lacquer coupe/truck/roadster fenders for a 28/29 if anyone knows of someone whos got some? I am still kicking myself for passing on some nice commercial running boards at the Long Beach Model T swap lol. Hindsight is 20/20. I am running a 46" Pete and Jakes axle. And man I wish I got a 47 or 48" axle. I've always liked when wheels are slightly more outboard but also want them to rub as little as possible. With my 4 bar setup for 34" wide perch bossed, the widest axle I can get is a 47". Debating running 1/2" wheel spacers in addition to the 47" axle, although wheel spacers do seem a little hokey to me. Also considered doing a 47" axle and disc brakes, (are discs wider than a standard f100 front drum brake setup?) I have a chevy truck master (its for the clutch and brakes, but is not a "dual" master cylinder as it doesnt differentiate front and rear wheels that would be needed for running discs up front and drums in the rear. Anyone ever run front discs using the same master I have? So I got some cipherin to do, but want to have the wheels set outboard just a little more. These are the 6" wide wheels with 3.25" backspace. Theyre ansen top eliminators and I'm really digging how they look. The original plan was kidneys but not sure.
Kidneys? Or ansen 5 spokes? Hmmm And a shot of the engine with the air cleaner. I wanted the corvette style wires that would sit behind the motor, but did not have the room. Big shoutout to Rick and Noble Speed Equipment for the bithcin wire separators.
You're right, the 48" axle would be MUCH better. Your wheels aren't centered in the fender. I don't know the answer about the brakes though.
Try a spacer, they're not that scary. If you hate it or don't like them, you can always change things again. What size are the front tires?
I am fairly certain that discs would add width (it is somewhat dependent on your lug pattern) I would investigate that before I considered a different axle. I would personally, without question, add spacers to get the width to where you want it. As stated above, they’re not scary, they are also cheap, and they can be added to or subtracted from to get to where you want to be.
I ordered some cragar 1/2" spacers from summit and 1/2" longer lug nuts. The kidneys are 135R15 michelin zx tires. The pirellis are 5.60x15 old tires. I dont plan on running the pirellis but I like the size. Need to find a good looking radial font tire for a 15x6 wheel.
Called roadster supply and their super narrow discs are 4.75" from king pin center to wheel mount surfsce. The wider ones they have are just over 5". I need to pull a wheel and see what the f100 kp center to wms is. The biggest problem is how to get the master to work with disc fronts and drum rears and something I need to research more. Currently trying to wire the turn signals with a cool NOS 3 wire turn signal unit, and so I ordered some relays cause I reckon thats the only way to make it work. First time doing turn signals but I think itll be a nice feature for the car since I doubt anyone knows hand signals besides left turn haha
Don’t do anything until you get the actual tires that you are going to use. If you are putting your front tires on 6” rims they are going to be about twice as wide at the tread, that will change everything. I was going to say something about your front tires being too small but I figured that I probably should keep my opinion to myself.
https://share.google/S1JPKj7Arpl662yD2 155/80R15 which is also called 155R15 has some neat offerings in a decent sized front radial which is similar to that 5.60.
Whats the verdict on coker radials? I hear mixed reviews lately about the bias plys needing to be shaved to be balanced... Does anyone have any reviews of the radials? I like the firestone F560x15 155R15 Firestone F560 Radial Tire But it is for 4" to 5.5" wheels and mine are 6". Would that be a problem? And thanks for the kind words, No Respect.
Wired the headlights tail lights and turn signals. Rich B helped me a bunch with the turn signals since I'm using an older 3/4 wire turn signal and regular speedway pontiac style 1156 bulb tail lights. Had to wire these with a relay to get them to work. Didn't end up doing the front turn signals. Maybe for another time. I really dig the green flasher on the end of the lever. Colin gave me this bithcin center license plate light/ turn signal to also add, which I also wired in. You can see the flashers and left side turn signal in the two pics.
Heres some pics of the passenger door. A friend helped me out a bunch with the door. I wouldnt have figured it out without him. Gonna probably just add some glazing putty and then brush paint this passenger door. Heres a picture of the interior. Thinking black rolls and pleats with white piping on the buckets.
Here two pics of the door gaps. Passenger side looks great. Gonna need to shim the drivers side, but before I do that I need to finish the door. The dilemma I'm having with the drivers door is that I have two, where one is just super pitted, and all the hardware inside is pretty thing for the regulator, and window channel and window. The other door I have has absolutley mangled hinges and don't think I have the skills to fix it. I'm keeping an eye out for a nicer candidate that maybe just needs work on the bottom, similar to the passenger door. If anyone has one and is in the mid west, or San Diego area, I spend a good amount of time in Indiana and can drive pretty far to pick up a drivers door. The drivers door is pretty much the last thing on the truck. lol
I was debating getting some American rebel sprints. Same front wheel sizing, but just some 15x 8 rears with 4.25" BS. It would***** the back wheel to inside the fender. It would also allow me to get some good looking diamondback raidals that look like bias plys.
Really appreciate the build details on your cool CCPU project. Very helpful as I slowly build my RPU, thanks!
The hardest part is turning off the TV, standing up off the couch and walking to the garage. As silly as it sounds thats the hardest part for me. Gordy
I don't watch T.V.! I got so many other irons in the fire these days. Honestly, once I settled on what direction I was going in, the truck told me what it needed. Now it's yelling at me!
