Its better than my phaeton in terms of room. I think the swing pedals, bucket seats being thin, and not mooving the firewall too much was key. Badshifter's model A firewall idea is great.
You probably shoulda taken pictures of me driving it.....I wasn't sure I was getting out after shoe horning myself in
Haha on her second maiden voyage (first one with doors) you were hesitatnt to get in, but you just couldnt resist a light pickup with a hot motor . You need to get an extended cab version of a 28CCPU going after your camaro!
Made the fender braces yesterday. Used the existing pieces I cut off that go above the fender and attach to the outboard side of the fender and bent them to follow the outboard side of the fender going forward. Then bent up some 1/2" steel rect tubing to go from there to in between the carriage bolts on the main part of the fender brace. Hopefully it doesnt rub cause I really want to not put a spring lead back in teh front haha (I removed two from the low reverse eye spring kit). I'll be able to test drive it today but they feel stout. Any idea on other materials to use if they do rub? Would 1/4" tubing or channel steel work? Thanks. Gordy
Drove it today. Fenders shook a lot less (but still a little which I reckon is common when doing 70-80). No rubbing... Well maybe a little bit at the extremes but the same as it was before. Gonna paint em up soon and reattach them. Thanks for the great idea, weedburner!! Gordy
Anyone know if having a long grain stock model A vinyl top, if you can eliminate highway noise from in the cab? I feel like I've plugged every hole but still whistles lol. I have a couple theories.... could it be the vinyl top? could it be the visor making a Billowing sound of wind? would punching louvers in visor help to get rid of the noise ? any help would be awesome!!
You probably aren't going to be able to get rid of all the noise but you can reduce it. If your windshield doesn't seal up rear tight, it could great wind noise around it. The most likely spot is the forward edge of the doors. These overlapping doors have what amounts to a scoop for air to come inside the cab. If you can put a small weatherstrip down the front of the door, you might be able to stop it. I have done this on my 34 coupe and still have wind noise. A good, tight fitting wind cord will do wonders too.
The phrase I use to describe the "ample" room in a 28-29 Model A truck cab is "kneecaps in nostrils." Once you've shoehorned yourself into one, you know what I mean. It's a dance, like the hokey pokey. You put your right foot in, you turn your right foot out, you swing your **** on the seat and turn it all about, you pull your left foot in you turn your left toes out, you slide your heal in and hope you don't fall out.
Yeah I added some rubber gl*** bedding to the front of the door. Then some universal foam rubber to the tailgate side of the door. And some lower door seal gasket to the bottom of the doors. I plugged all the holes in the floor with dynamat, as well as above the windshiled on the header panel, I put some dynamat in the far outboard nooks and crannies next to the vinyl roof. The noise went from a deeper billow to a higher pitched whistle (which I think means it has to get worse in order to get better lol) The windshield frame doesnt have the tightest fit. Could be tighter. Maybe ill start playing with that next. I did want to see if taking the visor off would help at all. Anyone know a good louver guy in San Diego CA? I guess I could venture up to LA but really would prefer not to. haha I could also do speed holes, but theyre kinda crude, not that my truck is a peach by any means lol Thanks! Gordy
Colin and Butch helped me thrash on getting my rear fenders fixed up and then I put on commercial running boards. Happy with the fenders now. Next is cutting out the spare tire and fitting in a nice smooth piece from a donor fender I have... and brush painting the bed, one door and hood dark green.
You’re taking one out and I’m probably going to try to add one to a fender I have lol. I’m gonna make Louvered “lids” for the wells and use them For road coolers when they aren’t holding a spare haha. love your fender brace solution. I’d thought of something similar but hadn’t considered going forward with the loop which I would think would really stiffen them up. I would consider adding some bump stops instead of adding a leaf if things are still rubbing more than acceptable
This truck is so good. What do you think of the saddle tanks now that you've been using it a bit? Just curious, have you straightened out that right side bed rail and if so how did you do it? Mine need some straightening and I'm not sure how to manage that without crushing the square edge.
did straighten that out. Colin showed me. We just took a cherry picker and got 90% of it out just jacking it up where it was kinked. We also used a slide hammer and tried pulling it out and got a good portion of it fixed. Good enough for this truck. I don't mind the saddle tanks. My fuel gauge needs some attention so it's nice that when I run out of gas on the left side, I switch to the right side and then make sure I fill up the left side sooner than later. lol I'm definitely filling the spare tire well. Haha also can't take credit for the fender braces. That was all weedburner40s idea! And I love it! Gordy
