Lots of people don't think the bones are strong enough to be used that way. I think they are. That's what I was talking about.

    Which bit?

  3. im enjoyn this. the hk steeringbox conversion could find itself being used on my t bucket. thanks.

While not quite in that style ,mounting springs on the wish bone been done that for decades. As example, in the 1960's there was book published in US showing how to drill a hole through the wish bones ( split) and welding 34 perch's in place. There is Plenty of strength ,the end of the spring will break off before those wish bones break or twist . They are something like 5mm thick and pretty good quality steel. The only thing i could see is an inspector reminding you that the Street rod guide lines advise that the ends of Split wish bones should only be 300mm apart and not bent to widen them.

Yeah, plenty of full reg and SR plated cars around with split bones if I need to prove a precedent. Not too concerned about that. You're right, the bones are plenty beefy. I didn't bend them though.

  6. Yeah but most of them were changed after they had the plates on them or they have some not quite legal rego.

I wish we could just run them on the rails like the yanks as it sure would have made it easier for me when I built my car.

Well it's been quite a while. Things have been happening but I've been slow on the camera. The chassis is all together with the motor and box installed. It might have to come back out again due to more clutch issues. Should see tomorrow. I had the body on the other day for a test fit. I had really never had everything together all at once. That's a bad idea!

Anyway a few things didn't quite work but nothing major.

So, I've hard plumbed all my fuel lines, mounted some lights, mounted the fuel tank, assembled my engine, clutch and gearbox (for now), fitted up handbrake cables and they work well, torqued the harmonic balancer and axle nuts with a big bar and a torque wrench (hope they don't have to come off for a while), I mounted my steering box and column, windscreen, made a dash rail to work with the Hallock screen.

It all seems like small stuff, but I've been busy on it. I also made some screen for my carb scoops out of a fine brass mesh...anyone got any theories on this? Will they cause a restriction to my air flow?

A few pics for now. That's all anyone wants anyway...

Some fuel lines. Shit theres a lot of plumbing on a car. And nothing has the same size or class of thread.

I was about to fit up one of those dial (Mr Gasket style) pressure regulators when someone put up a post about how crap they are..one step back

One of the things I found out when I did my trial fit of the body was that it doesn't fit between the 7.00 x 16 'Stones the way it used to fit between the 6.00s.

Next week I'll take them off and adjust the offset by 1/2"...one step back

I am planning to do the wiring on Friday. I have an inspection due tomorrow before I put the body back on. I wanted to get the exhaust done on Thursday so the body could be back on to stay after Friday. My exhaust man came for a look today and shook his head. That won't be happening.

So I'll continue down this road of two steps forward, one step back until I finally get there. It's better than no steps at all.

  9. Looking good Pete, that light at the end of the tunnel must be getting a little brighter.

BTW I love the way you have done your diff breather.

It's looking real Purty there !. :). Is that a facet pump in the line? Would it have enough volume to feed the carbs ? (as opposed to pressure)

My Roadster has split bones on the outer rails and it was'nt an issue going through SR plates. Carefull what you through out there, comments like this is how the whole "guards" issue got ugly.

I even dreamed I was driving it the other night.

That diff breather happened because I fucked up and didn't realise I was going to need one when I did the open drive conversion. I wasn't pulling the whole thing apart to drill a hole in one of the bells, so a bit of thought and...Voila.

Good question. Don't know. It is supposed to suit V8s. There's a lot of stuff like that on this car. Will 3 48s feed the 401? Will the banjo stand up to the 401 and 4 speed?

We'll see how we go and change things as we go I suppose.

  13. Dang its coming together nice. Hey if you cant feed the monster with the 48s I have a line on a Hilbourn EFI set up for it. Was going to buy it for mine before everything went pear shaped.
    Doc.

  14. My comment was more to do with full rego than SR plates and please don't get me started on "guards".......

I always busted keys and axles and once snapped a shaft in the torque tube (32 pickup) but never broke a crown wheel or pinion although I tried real hard once when I had some wank idea of selling the flat motor and buying a 350 SBC. and decided I didn't need all that pre war stuff anymore. That was nearly 35 years ago mind you and I have forgiven myself now.
I learnt how to prevent keyway damage when an older guy told me to clean up the hubs n' axles in the lathe then lap them in with carborundum ultrafine lapping compound. They fit so well i reckon a key was just decoration. :D
My younger brother had a Buick powered Allard ,with a Banjo rear, 322 4Bbl with young idiot behind the wjheel, didn't break then either.:)

Actually I am curious about what the guard situation is. I'm out of the local loop so I don't know about it. Maybe a short PM would be more appropriate?

My hubs and axles are lapped too.

Mmmm Hilborn. I'll keep it in mind

  18. SOB! I spelled Hilborn wrong! (Am I out of the 'Hot Rod' life club now??)
Its not cheap and has never been on a car, if I get this job permanent I will still buy it.

  20. On a side note and a little O/T, how is the area going in the clean up after the fires?

    Hi

What front tires are you using? Are they available now or are they something old?

  22. Nice work Pete, enjoy the thread, keep up the postings. cheers:)

  23. All coming together well Striper! Yes, there is a lot of plumbing. Re. the exhaust, mate if you can do what you've done, you can do the rest of the exhaust. I sure hope the nannies don't make you fit any kind of protection on the headers.

I look forward to a report on the Torque Fork (tm) in action.

  24. Guards, deep down you know the answer Pete.... more so now than ever. :(

    Sure is looking good though.

Yeah, it's a bit of a race now isn't it. Fuck it, I'll drive it in the rain.

I'm not hearing much as we weren't directly affected and I'm not hearing via work because I'm on leave. I might go to a community meeting on Friday though.

They are old Olympic Trojans. Kinda like them. They're a little like the old implement tyres with a bit more of a tread pattern.

The exhaust will get done. No pain - no gain. I will need some sort of guard on the headers I'm sure. Hope I can make one that won't fall off.

The Torque fork will be good...if I can explain to Con what it does.

Oh yeah, I get it. I just got the impression there had been some action or discussion or something.

I asked once about water necks / thermostat housings for nailheads on here. I got some advice that SBC ones fit. I bought one ...they don't. Then I think Zman gave me a link to an aftermarket one...$65US. Ouch, that's $100AU + shipping.

I just finished this up tonight:

Came out OK. Lucky I'm not on hourly rate but no use having the big expensive machine if you don't get to play with it.

BTW, is aluminium swarf sharper than steel?...I'm sure it is
